What water do you think has the best potential for a 50" fish? I am not asking where the biggest, meanest muskie is, I am asking where the best potential is for someone who is just going to go fishing with a friend to catch a 50" muskie.

What do you think?

Lake of The Woods, best chance for a fifty, maybe not a superlunker 54 plus but for a fifty it would be my choice. Probally the easiest place to catch one casting just start throwing some Marv's spinnerbaits, Super Raiders, Jackpot and maybe a Reef Hawg around some cabbage weedbeds and some reefs from last week of June throuh August and hang on. Opps gave out too much info. God Bless, Al

Steve,

Not all too many years ago I would have ranked Wisconsin up there with the others... I don't believe that to be the case any longer...Sure there are still some good waters to fish here and yes there are still some nice fish being caught from time to time but day in and day out I would pick the following in no special order:

Minnesota Lakes, do your homework on potential bodies of water. The Packers might be better than the Vikings but MN is kicking WI a$$ as far as fish management is concerned.

Canada...LOTW, Eagle, Wabagoon... and those little lakes no one ever talks about..!

Ottowa or St. Lawrence...Seems the boys out east are consistently puting some very respectable fish in boat.

Just me .02 cents worth...

I wish WI could get some of those Leach strain fish, as that would be awesome.  After fishing MN waters and netting 50" fish and raising several others in a short trip, I'm convinced they grow to superior lengths and lakes can sustain more biomass of them than lakes with other strains of muskies.  There was even a study on Leech strain fish in a lake or two in WI and they grew to enoromous sizes as they do in MN.  That said.  I'll take a 50"er out of my favorite WI lake over any from MN(just plain heavier fish here for their length).  That said also, I don't think there is a better place to boat a 50"er than many MN lakes, and I'll be back in 04, many times!!!!!!!

LOTW.Has numbers, and size. However, like any body of water, you need time on it to increase your chances of 50,s.They don,t exactly jump in the boat when they are that size.I see new people to the area complain about not getting big Muskys, because they read about how good it is up there. It takes years to learn just one small part(Sabaskong, Whitefish,Angle, etc) of this lake to be really good fishing it.If you want to increase your chances of 50,s, hire an experienced guide of that area. He,s already put the time on that water for you.I don,t use guides for one reason;1/2 the fun for me is trying to figure out where the Muskys are. When I do catch a Musky, I know my game plan put that fish in the boat.Gives me a sense of accomplishment.Good Fishing.

I have to agree with Reef Hawg, those fish in Minnesota are genetically and environmentally ready to go gonzo!! Lots of fish and as time moves along more 50's . Spend a week on Mille Lacs or Vermillion and your odds are as good or better than anyplace north of the border.

The number of 50's that are caught on Vermilion....staggers the mind. Hardly a single day goes by, that you don't at least see one come to the boat.

Average size is 46.5" (MNDNR) WOW!

I've got to say Minnesota also. After fishing Mille Lacs and Vermilion the last 2 years , I'm convinced. LOTW is still my happy place , but Mn.is now tops in my book. Sure, one could spend a couple grand for a week long guided excursion , but the hunt is 1/2 the fun. These lakes are relatively close and accessible to all. Steve
