| Building myself a kicknice try rod soon. Was going to pair it with a 400 tranx. I have and love my 300 tranx....BUT.... is there anything else I should look at? I've used the gen 1 lexa and revo and they were ok, do the newer ones compare with my tranx? Am I crazy to think there is another option at all? I know FFO tackle has deals on the revo beast 50 right now (199) I believe it to compete with a 400 tranx but does it? | |

| I have both the 400 Tranx high speed. And the Revo Toro Beast high speed 60.
Beast came with 3 handles. The big power handle pulls 10's amazingly well.
The Tranx has one handle and doesn't pull the big blades as well as the Beast, but still it can get it done.
To me, it seems like the Tranx is smoother. Picks up more line. It is the "Big Rubber" reel for me. Though I do use it for smaller bucktails, swim baits...etc.
The Beast is my "go to" reel. Bigger blades, glide baits (yes, it picks up line nicely for big glides)....etc.
If I'm going on a trip and can only take one reel, it's the Beast all day long as it is just more versatile for me.
One word of caution concerning the Beast.... Casting. That big power handle is heavier, so if you really whip your cast out there, it can and does move forward and stop your cast. Terrible sound and it can damage the reel. All you need to do is cast softer, or roll the reel on your cast so that the reel is either "down" or "up", just not to the side, when you release your bait. No issues once I started doing that. But, it is something you need to know and understand if you choose the Beast.
To be fair, I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

Location: Chisholm, MN | I'm a Tranx guy all the way. I use a beast on occasion. It's a nice reel and you wouldn't be disappointed. Lexa HDs are good too. All that said, I have broken 3 level winds on 2 tranx 400s and a 500 just this season. I believe there was defect going around. Sent them in to be fixed and they did it for free. They seem fine now. They would not confirm that there is a defect going around so maybe I was just unlucky but it's not the only one that I have heard of recently. I will still use Tranx over any reel, even after the issues I have had. They simply last a long time, are smooth and cast a mile.

You're not alone. 3rd level wind this season one one each 300, 400 and 500, and my 500 went last year as well, each of them getting 'stuck' in the left position. I think it's a california thing. Nonetheless, love the reels, and prior to this season had nothing but rave reviews hence my owning 5 of them. But now I'm seeing even they need a spare in the storage compartment, as this issue arose not so late in the life of each. Ordering another 300 HS soon, hopefully issue rectified. One would think that with a disengaging LW, this should be an issue of the past. I put a ton of hours on em, so not entirely an equipment thing but.. Glitch, I'm sure..

Interesting. My 500 lasted 5 years before the level wind broke because of ice last November. Normal thing. Sent it to California over the winter and broke the level wind in 2 days this June. They seem good now though. Hopefully they fixed the glitch. It was frustrating getting ahold of them to pay too. Called probably 10 times and was put on hold for 45 minutes each time until I finally got through.

My 500 was good for several years also, have had it in twice in 2 seasons, now the others. Sent mine to Cali and they got sent to Carolina. Just sent the 500 in again, and for the first time the service address is in Carolina. We'll see what happens, I need the reel and hope to avoid need for a backup for each one during repairs like I did with my Penns/Lunas/Calcutta's back in the day.
