The later in the year the worse it can be since the warm water will reach farther into the water column. 80 degree surface temps in August and even September are worse than in say early June.

80* F has become the unofficial cutoff for most folks I know, and a lot depends on dissolved oxygen content, stratification, and all that. Moving streams may be safer at higher temps than stagnant lakes. Air temp is a consideration, also; are you jigging up muskies from 72* water and waving them around in 90 degrees, or doing a quick boatside release? Think of yourself jumping from a hot tub into a chilly pool. As cold blooded critters, the effect on the fish would be the opposite. m
