Hi folks, just joined the site. Looks awesome! This is a question for all those who fished LOTW in 2003. Doesn't matter what time of year ya'll went, just interested in what worked for others and would like to compare notes.

Here's what we found. Went up for two weeks to LOTW (Sabaskong) from late July to early August. First night raised one mid 40" fish on a TopRaider. That was it though for topwater action. Threw it a lot, but to no avail other than a 32" pike. Found fish both in the weeds and on the rocks. Most of the active fish were in the weeds, the hitters came off of rocks. Had a lot of missed fish and short strikes. Anyone else seem to have this problem? Moved a majority of fish on hair and buckless bucktails. Caught a 48" off a rocky shoreline on a Lilly Tail. Had a 50" hot on the Lilly Tail as well, got her to hit a Voo Doo Tail but she got off almost as quick as she hit. Moved more fish under bright conditions than overcast. Found 3-4 different active fish in a small weedy bay ranging from upper 30s to mid 40s. Moved fish off of BIG, single boulders just off of shore. Moved fish from west, southwest facing weedy bays with rocks. Also moved some fish from the inside weedline, most though from the outside. Most of the action came from the lee-side of structure, opposite of where the wind was blowing. Might be headed up again this July. Stoked to say the least! Can't wait! Now's the time to start doing your homework. Take care!

Welcome! I got to fish Sabaskong for the first time with the group from this board. Check out the Outings forum for summaries and the photo album page dedicated to Sabaskong. Every picture tells a story.
The hair baits were very very good to me up there. We each got a courtesy bait the first night, I was given a Mepps black with gold blade that got me all my muskies. Someone else I know did well on a red perch sledge but I don't wanna talk about it. Anyway, lots of folks here have time on the water up there I'm sure they'll help ya along. m

Sounds to me like you are well on your way to mastering this part of the system with a solid first year. I have fished everywhere on this system and primarily focus on the northen area from big narrows to shoal lake but have fished sabaskong. Rock areas for me after the fourht of july have been better producers with the exception of high skies where I fish a lot of slop weeds. The best big fish bait I have found on the system is a blue and silver jackpot with any big bucktail being a close second. For numbers its hard to beat a medium sized french bladed bucktail fished fast over large areas of rock structure. After mid july I am a reef hawg from here on out for the most part. The bigger and more irregular you can find with deep water access the better. But like I said look for junkyard areas to produce in high skies. These areas can hold some monsters as well. Early to mid july is my favorite period for numbers with october being the time to stick a pig. hope this little bit helps.

Spent the past two Fourth of July's in the NW Angle. The first year we were lucky and fished small weedy bays, almost exclusively. Only caught fish up to 43". We had no confidence on the rocks.

This year we were only finding dinks in the weedy bays. We decided to go after rocks which neither of us had ever fished before.

Sure enough, we located some real slobs on the rocks. With rocks with any size patch of weeds nearby being the key.

Fell in love with the Big Narrows area. We stay at Monument Bay Lodge and can tell you that next summer, we will be pounding rocks in Big Narrows more often.

Fished Sabaskong about 120 days this year. Caught over 60 decent sized muskies up to 51". Almost all of them were caught on a 500 series Buchertail. That goes from the start of the season on through to mid Sept. Rocks were definitely the key this past season with the low water. Lee side also worked well for me. Caught some in the weeds, but more on the rocks. After checking hundreds of pictures of muskies caught over the past 50 years of fishing LOTW, I was amazed to find that most of the big girls were caught on bright days. Especially those days after wind and rain. Other lure producers were Suicks, Believers, Topraiders, spoons (believe it or not), Grandma and soft plastics. I believe the fishery on LOTW for muskies is as good as it has been in the past 50 years. CPR really has made a difference.

Hi exox50

I live in Winnipeg and fish LOTW's alot. I fish mostly the northern section around kenora. I caught all most of my fish trolling this year with my best day being 3. (should have had 6) The mag rap and sinking salmo were the hot lures of the year plus did well with Jakes and believers. I saw alot of fish casting but very few takers? Not sure what that was all about. My casting fish came from saddles between Islands, cabbage beds on saddles and rocky points. Saddles were hot! All my trolled fish came from points and reefs that jetted out from shore. It was amazing. There was this one shore line that just dropped right down to 30 feet of water. You could troll right up to the wall. Along this shore there are two Distinct raises in depth. I caught four fish of that one small 200 yard stretch this year plus, some hudge pike as well.

Spent a week up at the Northwest Angle in mid-late July. Man were they chasing hair. All but three of the fish were caught on Mepps Musky Killers, The others were caught on Top Raiders. Most of the fish came off of rocky points with weeds nearby. 15 fish during the week up to 48", with 9 of them over 40".

A strange note, we got some real windy weather when we were up there, and thanks to a tip from MRoberts and Oneida Esox we got on a pattern on the calm side of structure. The fish were where the wind wasn't.

Have any of you ever stayed at Jakes NW Angle resort?  We were thinking of booking a cabin there, and were wondering if it was in a good area.  I have fished primarily on the Winnipeg river and don't know much about LOTW other than the angle gets talked about alot.  Just wondering if their resort was close to some of the good fishing, as none of us have huge motors to run many miles to the first spot.  We like to stay at a resort where the fishing starts close by.  A typical day on the Winnie sees me running about 35-45 miles total a day on average.

thanks for any info.

Jakes I have never stayed at but have heard good things. This is doug Johnson's home base if that interests you. Wiley point is a top knotch camp as is Angle Inn, Walsh's, and Ash Rapids. The Ash Rapids area contains the biggest muskies in the system in my opinion with no fishing pressure. Be prepared to cut your teeth in some clear water though which can be tough. Bring some jackpots and eagletails along if you are interested.
