This morning my boat partner caught a beautiful 40" - 42" fish. Beautiful net job by me and it was super easy to get the hooks out. As soon as she was unhooked, she swam into the side of the net with her mouth open and started thrashing. Seconds later, the fish swam right through the side of my net. What? She actually chewed a hole in my net and swam off into the depths without a measurement or picture.

What's the stupidest/weirdest/craziest way you've lost a fish?

Grabbing for the net while fishing solo, the fish bolted to the rear of the boat and ran the line across the prop. Lost the fish and lure. Still think about that one every time I net a fish.

I think just about anyone who has caught a lot of Muskies has also lost them every way imaginable. Swam out o home in the net, jumped out, swam out, hooked to the outside, horses a beak hooked fish, half in the net half out then gone.

One time 3 of us were fishing my partner hooks an upper 40's fish. He is one of those guys who does laps around the boat with the fish. I set my Calcutta down but not flat in his dual counsole bass bubba boat. Of course the net job takes place where I set my rod, which was nowhere near the start of the fight, in the drink it goes. I grabbed the rod it was just a second but it was enough for the fish to become unhooked, turn around and swim out of the just enough hoop under water as I lifted and could get the fish back in. I didn't lose my rod and reel though but my partner would have rather I did.

Brass screw eye on old Giant Jackpot opened up and front hook, fish and split ring went bye bye... 30#er too. Worst thing is hook was so buried in corner of mouth, fish was never getting off. Never say never I guess

Here's a recent one. Buddy nets my fish and I swear he's mad cuz I'm catching them this year and he's not. So after the fish is netted he's holding the net at an obscenely large angle with the hoop almost in the water supposedly to keep the fishes head in the water, and of course after thrashing in the net and dislodging the hook herself, she then promptly jumps right out of the net. To add a nut kick to the situation, as the fish jumped into the lake, a total hill rod was trolling by in only a bottom set of camo bibs on with his "B" cups and belly hanging out and says in a 14 year old girl brat voice "Loooooost One". I don't know who I hate more.

Haha that’s pretty good!

I used to fish steelhead now and then. I had never caught one and was trying like hell. I sat my rod down on shore to take a break with my spawn sac still sitting in a slack pool. All of a sudden my rod started moving so I set the hook and promptly bring in about a 6 pound kamloops which had a clipped fin and beautiful dark markings. I was pumped! Caught my first and I planned to eat it. Jaultman, who used to be on this forum often, told me to rinse it off in the river quick for a better picture. It was full of sand. I bent over and immediately the fish wiggles out of my hands and back into the river. I was so bummed! If you know the knife river On the north shore of superior, you know that the sucker hole had about 30-40 fisherman lined up around it. Well, they all laughed. Every one of them! Pretty funny and embarrassing for an 18 year old punk
