I just got the green light from the boss to get a new locator. Just wondering what you are using, and any that you can recomend. I'm looking in the $3-400 range.

I am leaning toward Lowarnce, but have heard good things about Garmins. Anybody use either, and have any suggestions?

Lowrance is, and has been, my choice for as many years as I can recall. I bought the first LCD they had, still have it, and it still works. I use it for ice fishing as an extra or a spare.

I have the X-15 on my console, and it is the best sonar I have ever seen. I think the x-97 is a very good unit, but maybe a little over your price limit. The Eagle 320 is a great value for around $200. Has a few less features than the X-97, and less power.

Currently I have a Hummingbird, a Eagle, a Bottomline, and two Raytheons...I will reccomend the Raytheon hands down. Models I have are 365 and 465. I think the model #'s are slightly different now. The Eagle is not too bad, it is a Magna II Plus. For those who do not know Eagles are made by Lowrance. The Bottomline I have is a "bottom of the line model"...lol.. I think their better units might be above your price range, not positive though. Both of the Raytheons I have should be at or below your price range. Of the three hummingbirds that either I or friends had I would not reccomend them, maybe we just had lower quality stuff(all from late 80's or early 90's). Somewhere on the Muskyfirst website is a transcript of a interview with someone from Lowrance, maybe that could also be of some help.

I run the Garmin Fish Finder 240 and love it. If your running it on a tiller or on your councle it great cuz it is standerd with temp and speed. You get a great read on the bottem and sreucture as well as fish.
The 240 will run you around $300.00

The name of the game is resolution. Eagle and Lowrance have 320 VERTICAL pixels in the models I mentioned in your price range. If you could go higher, I would spring for the X-15. You can then add GPS later.

I run a Garmin 240 on the console and a Lowrance X91 up front. I like them both. Garmin is a little easier to run I think. My dad had a problem with his Lowrance x91, transducer was goofy and kept losing the bottom. Thought it was installed wrong but it lost the bottom when we sat still in the water. Brought the transducer back and got a new one no questions asked. Good customer sevice is somthing to think about too. Don't know about Garmin have had no problem with it.

Pixels on the Raytheon 365 is 240X64 (15360 pixels) and the 470 has 240X128 (30720 pixels). The 365 I found for $199 some where(boaters world I think) and the 470 $399 at cabelas. Raytheon has other models but these were the two I found in the price range.

Hey Joel,

I have (2) X-85 on my tub. One console, and the other up on the bow. In my 4th year now, and trouble free. Including the mornings I had to scrape ice off the screen just to see how many fish I was motoring over on my way to my favorite spot that held no fish! (LOL) I would stick with Lowrance.

Thanks for all the input guys. I was leaning towards Lowrance. I had an ancient X-4 on the boat, and now, I will just hook it up to play donkey kong on it. :). I am heading to the local BPS tonight to do some research.
Good lungen,

Tuff....If you have to buy it now, go for the Fishmark 320, X-87 or the X-97. If you can wait until Feb, Lowrance will be intoducing a new line up...more resolution (480 Vert pix) and more color units.

I run the X-15 and X-19 and am getting the X-104C for next spring...these are great units, but way past $400.00.

The Fishmark is by far and away our best seller.....$169.99.

I run a Lowrance X-85 on the console and a Garmin 240 at the bow. I believe the Garmin 240 is most intuitive, easiest to operate unit I have ever had. Have had zero problems with it and use it in fresh and salt water and fish over 200 days per year. You won't go wrong with the Garmin.
