has anyone tried this? I have some burts and I can retrieve the unweighted model so it snakes through the water so I was wondering whether I could troll these as well. Or would it be better to use the weighted model? How deep can you get it to run (approximately).

Unweighted Burts are tremendous shallow water trolling baits. They have the same swing to them on a troll as they do on a straight retreive. I would even try trolling some of the squirrely versions. I have found that a bait that does not have the action I am looking for witha cast can often be a great troller.

2'-4' is all you will get out of a Burt on the troll... the deeper it goes the less swing it will have generally.

I have never trolled the weighted versions.

do you need to tune the bait perfectly to keep it from blowing out of the water?

You should not have to do any additional tuning to make a burt run on the troll. The only thing you will have to play around with is speed. Too fast and you will have a blowout problem. However, an occasional blowout is a good thing in my opinion. The surface is an edge so if you have a burt that swings well to both sides on the troll combined with a blowout here or there... you have a solid shallow water troller.
