Muskies Through The Ice! ????

Sounds like Fun EH? I have caught my share of muskies through the ice while fishing more for walleyes than pike. They sure put up one heck of a fight under the ice. I have had to get stitches from the line zipping through my fingers. The biggest so far is a 37" Tiger.
How many guys here have pulled these fish thorugh the frozen water?

I got a 38 last February on a shiner on a tipup. The ol' Frabill Thermal Tipup handled it just fine. I was fishing for pike on a lake that has both and the musky hit.

Troy, one thing I don't like about targeting muskies with tipups is that many people wait until the line stops/starts before they set the hook. I.e. wait for the fish to swallow the minnow. This often results in more deeply hooked fish, sort of counter productive to catch and release. This may even happen by accident due to the angler being a fair distance from the tipup when the flag goes up.

What I have been doing of recent is to set the hook while the fish is still running with the bait. I haven't missed many and I usually get them in the corner of the mouth. I love to ice fish for pike early season...makes for great pickling and fish sticks.

If you are going to target musky through the ice (the season is actually closed in a few weeks in WI) please take along proper release tools.

Knipex hook cutters.
Small jaw spreaders.
Long handle pliers.

Try not to let the fish flop on the ice, get the hooks out and get'em back down the hole as soon as possible.

Now you're talking JoMusky material!

Season in WI closes in 5 days. I've caught a few through the ice on Pewaukee in years past while fishing the deep hole for eyes. I always try to hit the fish as it's running. Lotsa fun, as they can really power around. If you other tip ups set nearby, you may want to have your partner pull them to avoid a mess!

Caught a 26" last year on Minoqua Lake with Jo last January! Started my year off!

We'll get them on shinners fishing for eye's, but the best story I heard is when Sank's hooked @ 44" fishing for perch on a ultralite with 4 lb test in 50ft of water. He said it took him about 30 minutes to bring the fish to the hole and got a good look at it before it broke free. The DNR Agents have different opinons on bringing them thru the ice, one guy will tell you to cut the line when ID as a ski, and another say's remove the hook and release. Does anyone know the rule?

Have a Happy Thankgiving....

Sluggo send the pictures from CASS you TURKEY!!!!!

I was told by a retired DNR warden in Vilas co that if he saw anybody bring a musky through a hole, they were getting a cite....Little hard to enforce would'nt you think? This is the same guy who gave me a cite for having boat cushions that were'nt "Poofy Enough".

I personally dont see a problem with popping her out, removing the hook and letting her go....same as I do during open water prior to the Musky opener when I catch about 10 on jig and minnows.

I went to the DNR web site and it said the season closes Nov 30 for Musky Harvest...so that tells me CPR would'nt get you a fine, keeping one would.

uh oh. Another grey area in the interpretation of the regs by the DNR. Will it never end?!

CPR should be fine, but........ Again, it depends on the DNR warden you make contact with. Remeber in WI, some(most) of the wardens have the belief that if you are hunting or fishing, you are doing something wrong, and it's their job to figure out what that something is.

A few years back I witnessed a late November muskie that was 54" on a tip-up. The fight was brief, but spectacular. The 10" hole had to be expanded, but the guy got the fish unhooked and back down she went, none the worse for wear.
