Sue scored her first Whitetail ever this afternon. After passing a doe, she took her first buck with a single shot from her .243. What a great day!! We saw 4 bucks, one a shooter for me, but he refused to allow a clear shot. We passed a nice 6 after Sue took this one, looking for a big boy, we are unwilling to end the season so quickly. Keith saw 11 deer but no shooters; he's fussier than I am.

Jim and Lloyd took a doe and a nice 5 pointer out on one of Keith's favorite 'public land' stands about 20 miles from here.

Congratulations on your first deer, Sue. You're the best hunting parther a guy could ask for.

Brian's wife Sarah got her first deer today, a fork buck she dropped in it's tracks with her 30-30. Sue and I saw 9 today. We decided to pass all , even though we had deer within 15 yards a couple times.

I saw a monster buck, about 3 years premature, doing warp speed for all of 2.59 seconds at about 150 yards in woods to thick to shoot through. I had 6 does within 40 yards, all of which I shot multiple times without taking off the safety. I used my mind's trigger! Everyone of them successfully stayed perfectly in line with my parent's home for about 10 minutes.
My best friend is in the hospital this week undergoing what hopefully will be his last cancer treatment for a long, long time. I bought a bonus deer permit so that I could deliver one to his home in a wrapped and frozen condition. I hope that a nice big old doe will come half way by my stand!
Congratulations Sue! Steve do you have the perfect wife or what!!!

Congrats Sue. And congrats to you too Steve for having a great hunting partner.
I missed the opener for the first time in 30 years,(I'd rather bow hunt anyway)but it was well worth missing as I watched my daughters hockey team extend their record to 6-0 with a 6-4 victory. I think gun season will be on the back burner for many years to come.....and I'm not complaining at all. I had a chance at a 160 class 12 ptr and missed him at 10 yards when my arrow hit an unseen sapling. I figure most guys will hunt their lifetime without seeing a deer like that, so I'm not depressed. Actually I'm glad the deflection didn't hit him in the guts or something like that.
Oh well, from now on it'll be mid-week bowhunting and hockey weekends.

Wish I had better news to report from the opener. New land for us this year, and didn't seem to be very much shooting for the opener. Saturday started with drizzle and then wind. We did see about 15 deer, no bucks, but most were on the land south of ours. We did have 2 does come within range, but Eric had a hard time finding them in the scope before they continued off into the thick stuff. I think the wind kept the deer sitting tight. Sunday it rained hard for most of the morning. My nephew got a shot at a deer. We spent about an hour trying to find any trace of the knockdown and blood. Found none. No other deer seen on Sunday, as it seemed most hunters wanted to stay in and dry!

Back at it Wednesday. Was hoping to get the deer out of the way this weekend, and hit the muskies next Saturday and Sunday. Maybe Wednesday will bring better luck

Shep...sounds like we had the same weekend.

I hunted in Marshfield and the weather sucked with lots of rain. It was blowing with gusts up to 30mph at times. My scope on my rifle kept getting iced up and wet. My glasses were wet and I was wet. I stood up and my bucket blew out of my deer stand. Bascily it sucked. My nephew got a tall spike buck. My brother saw 4 does and when he went to shoot the big doe all he heard was "click". He got half of a firing pin stroke out and just tapped the primer. His gun was frozen with ice. I saw a couple of deer on Sunday and missed a doe at 10 yards while walking thru the tag alders. I think she was too close..lol

I keeped hearing a buck snort twice on Saturday about 30 yards from me upwind. I kepted looking into the tag alders and saw nothing. Sunday I did a slow drive walking one step every minute. I jumped him as he had been there the whole first day I hunted, only 30 yards from my stand. It was a six point and in two jumps he was gone.

Like you shep, try again later this week. What sucks is this morning was crisp and snow on the ground. I would have rather hunted today. I read the WI DNR site for the totals on the opener and they seemed real good. With very few shots in my area and the conditions with the deer just sitting tight its hard to believe those numbers. I also talked to many folks that did not do well this weekend, unless you were way up north in the snow belt.

Deer hunting this past weekend was tough. Not for deer numbers but the weather. I had my daughter with me for her 2nd gun hunting season. She sat from 5:15 till 12:30pm, 4 does and 30 turkeys kept her still. She was ready for a break when I came to see how she was doing. I shot a 10 pointer with a 15-inch spread at 11:00 am on Saturday morning. Took care of the hard part, getting the deer to the truck without a 4 wheeler and stopped by to see how she was holding up. We took a break, she checked out the deer and ate some lunch. Lets get back to the stands she said to me.

Krystina and I were back in the tree stands by 1:30pm for more action but just a small buck and a few does for me and a yearling for her.

Sunday at first light I called my partner Tom and asked him if we were nuts. Major rain and wind = a waist of time for standers. We stuck it our till 11:30 and off to the warm cabin for hot food and football. My daughter laughed at us as we walked into the cabin, she and I thought it would be better if she slept in Sunday morning.

Back out for more punishment till dark after half time. Sundays deer totals were 3 small bucks, a few big does and lots of yearlings. This area we hunted had lots of hunters all around us, shooting everywhere. I was surprized at all the shooting since it was trophy management area, or thats what were practiced.

I think the deer were all comming to our land. The deer I shot was kicked up from the neighbors land, ran past my hunting partner out of range and was going straight for the swamp. My 12 gauge stopped him as he reached the edge of the swamp. Shotgun only county is hard for some and great for others. I will post a picture of this buck when I get my camera back from the wife.

Pretty uneventful opener for me. Saw a few deer in the afternoon Saturday, including a seven pointer that didn't meet our management specs. With the ice/rain/wind/work, I have opted not too hunt since. Will be back in my stand Wednesday morning looking for that big buck or a tasty doe.

Nice work Sue!!! First muskie, first buck. You are having a great year!!!

Keith  saw a few deer today early, but no shooters. He did have an interesting intruder hunt it's way along his road in to his stand, turning into the woods just 25 yards from him. We both have a set of Barska binoculars with a digital camera in the center, pretty neat pictures!!

I saw absolutely nothing today. We think the storm this weekend moved the deer I have been seeing north east into heavy cover, as Keith has been seeing yearling bucks and does with fawns by the numbers where he is sitting northeast about 1/2 mile near a three swamp intersection. I'm watching a huge marsh opening (my longest shot is about 375 yards) with a creek running through it, and down a high powerline where there are three highland crossings. Saturday the crossings were very active with small bucks heading north in the storm, with as many in the marsh heading north Sunday. As soon as the gale force winds (gusts to 35 MPH today) here settle down, those animals will move south again, I hope!

Another day in the books, with 6 deer spotted and no shooters. Tomorrow begins the 'tag filling' timeframe where we become a bit less discerning. Had a fisher and a bobcat by my stand last night, but no shows during the daylight for the camera. Maybe tomorrow! Keith is cooking the turkey in his deep fryer, so we can stay in the woods until dark and still eat at a reasonable hour.

May all the hunters enjoy Thanksgiving, lots to be thankful for out in the woods!

Steve/Keith...very COOL intruder.
from the profile, I don't see a tail..is it a bobcat?

Are those common around Rhinelander?

what about other wild cats?

pretty neat......I'm not much of a woodsman, stick to water, so didnt realize we had wild cats around.

Yes , it is a Bobcat. We have a couple families here on my land, so they are probabaly pretty common. Fishers, Porkys, Otters in the creek, and bears (LOTS of bears) round out the bigger furry critter population here.

Today we saw only one deer, a little buck Keith passed. Keith did, however, see a big sow black bear and a cub amble through the area at about 1:30 this afternoon. We couldn't believe they weren't denned up yet, but there they were in front of Keith's stand.

We had a great Thanksgiving with my family. We also had a great plus in that we bagged two deer, so I will be able to deliver one wrapped and frozen to Darrel Mack's home. Hopefully he will beat the meat home after the last of his cancer treatments as he leaves the hospital next week.
Thank God!!
We all have much to be thankful for!!

An interesting year, to say the least. Eric and I headed back up to hunt Wednesday morning. Got to the land, into out stand, and saw 3 deer right at first light. They were in very thick brush, and we couldn't ID them as buck or doe, so we passed. About 10:00 AM, Eric saw 4 deer trotting across the neighbors picked corn field. The last of the 4 was a buck, but they didn't come over to our side, so we had to let them alone.

We went for lunch, and then back out for the afternoon. Around 4:00 PM, we saw a deer come out of the thick stuff in that same field and it was angling across to our property. I saw it was a one antlered buck, and was a big deer. Just as Eric raised the gun to prepare for this buck, the idiots hunting the property next to us started shooting at the deer. They were at least 350 yards away, and this deer was just a few yards from entering our side. After around 8 shots, the deer hightailed it back where he came from. As we got down from our stand, we saw the two hunters walking towards where the buck was, and were looking for any sign of a hit. I walked over that direction, as they entered the land to the east, where the deer went back in. As I arrived, I heard that landowner chewing them out for coming onto his land. As they came back out, I asked them where they were shooting from, and they pointed to the stand on the other end of our 40, just to the north. I remarked that that was an awful long shot, and they said they started shooting because it was about to go on our side! At this, I thanked them for giving my boy, on his first hunt, a very good lesson on hunting ethics. They looked at me as if they didn't understand what I was talking about. I wasn't surprised. I also noticed one of them was shooting a 30/30.

Thursday, we hunted the morning, and saw 6 deer. 3 were very close, and bunched together. I told Eric to wait for a clear shot at the big doe, , but they bolted, and he never got off a shot. I was to learn later, that I should have given him the green light. We saw a buck and a doe approching light speed a little later, but couldn't get a shot. We headed for Gramdma's house that noon for Turkeyday. We hunted behind her house, and for the first time in 7 years, I didn't get a deer from the field behind her land.

Friday, we were back in our stand, and saw 3 deer again to the field north of us. Around 8:30, we heard on the radio, a drive starting to the west, and 10 minutes later, I saw a nice doe running through the thick stuff to our west. She turned towards us, and stopped about 100 yards out. I then noticed another nice doe with her. Eric was ready, and as I watched through the binocs, he shot, and the first doe was down. The second trotted a few feet away, and unsure of where the shot came from stopped and looked, ans smelled to try to figure it out. I heard the .308 bark again, and this doe, too, went down. With 2 deer assuming ambient temperature, I turned to Eric, and told him he got both of them! After excitedly exchanging hugs and high fives, I asked Eric where he was aiming. He told me right behind the ear, as he couldn't see the whole deer in the thick marsh grass. We got down from the stand, wound our way around the wet stuff, and found the deer. Both shots were placed neatly behind the ear! We field dressed the deer, took a few photo's, and I let Eric get the wheeler to drag them out to the truck.

We hunted the rest of the day, and Saturday too, with hopes of seeing a buck. We saw a few more does, and little ones, but no bucks. Hardly anyone was hunting Saturday, and it didn't seem like anyone was driving anywhere around us, so we decided to come home last night. We saw deer everyday, but never saw a buck on our side the whole season. But it was a fun hunt, in spite of the rain, the high winds, and a couple of idiots. Not sure if we will hunt this same land next year. We will be looking for a better place for next year, but if we don't find it, we can always come back here, I guess.

Here are a couple pics of Eric's first deer.

Keith and I passed all the bucks we saw this week looking for 'the one', and knowing the cap and ball rifle will put him down this week as accurately as the new fangled rifle could last week. Our 9 day totals were 35 adult deer in range, out of which 18 were bucks. The biggest we saw was an 8. We both passed several first weekend, then they went to ground for a few days.

Our totals for the year for our party are 2 first bucks for the ladies, a buck for Brian, and three antlerless permits filled. We had a great week, and will still spend a couple hours in the stand with the cap and ball. I want a nice buck with the Hawken, we will see!

Todd,

Yup, had my .308 BAR for 4 years now. 13 shots, and 11 deer so far. Love the Nikon scope, too. Before that, I used a now retired pre-64 .308 Model 100 Winchester. That gun took a lot of deer also. Got to be too valuable to keep hunting with it, so I retired it the year I bought the new Browning.

Didn't Kirby always carry the BAR?
