| I was putting together gear today to prepare for the MN opener this weekend when I realized I needed some new hook cutters. Lowes was nearby so I headed on over to buy a pair of Kobalt mini bolt cutters to use, since the nearest place with a knipex is 45 min away and I don't have time to travel that far before opener.
I went online afterwards to see how people compare them to knipex. Obviously knipex is the cutter of choice, but it seems no one had any experience with the Kobalt's and most complaints are due to their low price (Kobalts are $15) and limited number of uses before they no longer cut effectivley. I get the whole "you get what you pay for" mentality, but due to limited time on the water I only expect to use them a half dozen times this season.
I will likely replace the Kobalts once they no longer function. For curiosities sake, does anyone have direct experience using both the Kobalt's and the knipex? Thoughts? |

| I have a pair of Kobalt's for back up and I have cut big hooks with them fine. Before that, I had the cheap pair from the musky shop (red handled) and they worked too. I use knipex now but the others will work too. |

| Knipex is the gold standard for cutting hooks. I bought my set from Menards.
I did have a Boucher hook cutter which failed (bent jaws) after only cutting a few sets of hooks. Knipex cuts easier and show no sign of wear after cutting half a dozen hooks. |

Last time I was at Menards I was looking for one also. They carry Knipex products but not that one. Home Depot supposedly does though |
