Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Next Saturday, thousands of hunters will wake early and take to the woods and fields of Wisconsin, hunting the largest herd of Whitetail Deer in the State's history. My friend Jim and his son are hunting north of here, but will be staying with us at the Hideout. Keith has his stands finished out on our land, and Brian and his wife Sarah do, too. Jim Kalkofen hunts south of here, and usually stops in one evening during the week to check what's hanging in the garage and have a cup of coffee over a few deer stories. Thanksgiving morning we will put the turkey in the oven, and hit the woods as if there isn't a big meal to prepare. By noon, Sue will be back in so the other stuff can be prepared, and at dark the hunters will straggle in if there is no late tracking to do. We eat late on Thanksgiving here at the Hideout because the few short days we have with our rifle are treasured so much by all the men. We will have plenty to be thankful for, that's for sure. Sue and I will be in the stand by first light, hoping for a decent buck to show for Sue's .243 to rack up her first deer. I am not sure what will decide my 7MM Remington Magnum trigger finger yet, that is too subjective for me to predict. Keith and I worked on the black powder rifles last night late, so the following week after Thanksgiving we will sit with the smoke poles a couple days, too. Who else is hunting in Wisconsin, and where is your favorite hunting area? What are your goals this rifle season? Who is going to hunt Black Powder? (MAN, that is fun. Open sights, and one shot.) |

Location: Stevens Point, Wisconsin | I still have some un-finished business to take care of first. Will be bow hunting next T, W and Thursday trying to catch up with the king daddy I seen last week. But for rifle My brothers and I will be hunting in the Phillips area. Brother has 180 acres and we lease another 180. Will hunt there till Monday, then head back home and hunt the Rosholt area for the rest of the week. Thanksgiving we will head out to my brothers land in Rosholt and sit in the morning for a few hours. Then we do some little two man drives and pop a couple doe’s. Then head in and watch the Packers play and swill down a few Millers. Eat about 5 PM and face down by 7PM!
God I love this time of year! Good luck to all and have a safe hunt! Ed Spoerl

| Yep, it was a weird musky year for me, with the boat tucked away early I got some bow hunting in, but no shooters...at least that would present themselves for a shot. Let a few small racked bucks pass last weekend (long weekend) and had a bruiser come chasing a doe past me three different times, but wouldn't stop at the right place. Only a basic frame 8, but he was very clean, wide and tall. Oh well, maybe late season.... Rifle hunting (7 Mag also) is no doubt a "can't wait". Up for the week and hope to take a decent buck. I have a place in northern Iron county and hunt several different stands over about a 20 mile radius.
Smoke Pole....I hope I don't have to but if so, yep. I was out west in September and took a decent 5x5 elk with the front stuffer. Open sights and when the 348 gr Aero Tip hit home, he side stepped twice and tipped over. Pretty cool! |

| I'll be heading to a good friend's deer camp in the western UP for part of the second week of season, and probably back again for black powder. Sold my Ruger M77/44 with the 1-4 Leopold shotgun scope a few weeks ago, so folks will be looking sideways at me when they see me taking to the woods with my Gramp's Ithica Featherlight 16 guage. But I killed about 12 deer in lower MI with it, so no reason it won't work up here. The black powder gun is a plain jane Knight Wolverine. |

| Wow, did this sneak up fast! Secured some new land this year near Princeton, and were out several weeks ago clearing shooting lanes, and putting up a couple more stands. This promises to be an exciting year, as Eric will be on his first hunt. We'll share a nice enclosed stand, and the .308 BAR. Perhaps I will get to be proud Papa 3 weeks in a row!

Location: Presque Isle Wisconsin | Ill be hanging up the Muskie rods and heading out at dawn with my long time hunting partner. We hunt together out of ground blind that has been placed at the same spot for many years. He has a shooting lane on one side and mine is on the opposite side.We tried hunting seperately a few times but missed the insults, laughter, and just the company in general. For me its a relaxing way to wind down from the guide season and spend some time with a good friend I dont get to see much of during the fishing season. One of us usually wins the Big buck contest at the local saloons, but it really doesnt matter anymore as long as we are out there having a good time. Good luck and hunt safely. |

Location: Greenfield, WI | I have been able to talk my Dad into hunting with me again this year, which will make it very special.
It already has been a very special year in that I was able to harvest a monster 6x6 bull elk last month in Wyoming, and be able to perform healthwise beyond my wildest dreams! Any buck which I'm blessed to
be able to get in Wisconsin's gun season will be bonus! |

Location: Greenfield, WI | From my two trips out to the Rocky's, the toughest part is coming home! Even though you leave the camp, your mind is always there. My trips were horseback wilderness trips. Our base camp was a half mile off the SE corner of Yellowstone Park. The base camp is at about 8000 ft. above sea level, with most of my hunting up near 12,000 ft.! The closest road was over 40 miles away!
You will have a great time as a total "experience". If you are fortunate enough to get an elk, that is a bonus. |
