First TWO, that is. Was going to fish alone today, but before I turned in last night, I asked my 7 yr old Lauren if she wanted to go trolling for Muskies. She said yes, and got her snowsuit out, and boots, and gloves, and scarf, and.......

Well, we were on the road at 5:00 am with a full thermos of hot chocolate, and fishing by 8:00. It was coooolllllldddddd. I caught a 43 9:00 AM and told her the next one was hers. About 9:20, the clicker went, and the board was under. I gave her the rod, and she kept tension while I cleared the other rods. Then I coached her to just reel it in, to let the rod do it's job. She went to the front center when it was time to take off the board, and reeled down to me. After that it was her vs. fish. She did a great job, and led the fish into the waiting Frabill. After cutting the hooks, I measured her first Muskie at 42 1/2", and set it in her arms. A couple of quick pics of her, and then an easy release. She waved good bye as the fish swam easily away. How cool. But, as it turned out, we were not done.

I caught another, this time a 42, and then the same rod went for her next turn. Again, she did a great job, and after a couple quick pics, we released a fat 37 1/2" to be caught again. I caught another at 39 a short time later. All these fish came in less than 2 hours, and all on the same bait in 2 colors! What an awesome day! Thanks, Lauren, for sharing this day with me.

Hey Shep, great day on the water, and the best net man a daughter can ask for.

Congratulations to you and to your daughter!

Congradulations on your daughter getting here first Muskie, and a nice one at that! I do have one concern though. Where is her life jacket? I am an adult and I will admit that in warm weather with warm water, I do not wear one. However, this is now fall with very cold water temps that will suck the strength right out of you. I never go out without a survival suit on. A good freind who is a very experenced giude out on L.O.T.W.s, fell in last weekend off a slippery boat deck. If he had not been wearing his survival suit, it would have made a bad situation worse. Because of the suit he was out fast and mostly dry. He also hit his head on the way down but did not get knocked out. Had he though, his suit would have saved him. You and your daughter should at least be wearing lifejackets at this time of year. Survival suits would be even better. Yes they cost alot, but they will save your life and keep a good muskie weekend from becoming a bad one.

Congrats... sounds like a great day even with the cold.

Lobi-

I on the other hand have 2 girls and couldn't get a boy. We opted to stop at 2. Don't think I could've handled four women in the house at one. How does Heff do it anyway????

Shep,

I would like to know why Dad got the first shot at a fish and not Lauren:(
I remember the first time my son got his first, I think I was more excited than he was, still brings a tear to my eye.
Now I need to concentrate on getting my daughter her first.

GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to preach, but Cory is absolutely correct. My father's long time fishing buddy was fishing Moose Lake 2 falls ago on a very windy day and was hit by another boat (while his boat was not moving). He flew out of the boat with no life jacket on and wearing the necassary fall attire. After numerous exausting attempts at grabbing the side of the boat, (with no assistance from the two who hit his boat) the boat came down as he tried to grab the side and luckily got a hold of it. He said if he hadn't grab it that time he would not have had enough energy to make another effort. He put the boat away for the rest of the year and only fished from shore the following year. And now wears a life jacket at all times in the boat.

Shep,
nice work, now it should be a little easier to convince her to go fishing next time I am sure! Fall fatties are awesome!!!
Kly
p.s. I just thought of another reason why having a "bigger net is better"
see attachment for details on what to do if someone should happen to fall overboard! ha ha

The really scary part is that the guys she picks to date in a few years may have the same addiction,,, It is you to blame for what may become a character flaw in guys at the front door.

Truthfully, this is really great for you and your daughter. Congrat's on a great trip. This is one she will remember for the rest of her life. No doubt she will be a great musky partner for dad as well.

Lobi,
I have 5 daughters ages 22 to 8, no boys. There is a trick to building them that I did not learn until we were done. You need to look at the pattern in front of you while you in the construction zone and build what you see. If only I had closed my eyes just once,,,,

My little one is only 3, 4 in January, but she loves to look at the fish pics. She thinks every fish is a Musky!! Thanks for sharing the pic Shep. Alise and I got a kick out of it.

Thanks everybody. It was fun to watch her reel in the fish. I think she was fighting the rod and reel as much as the fish! As far as taking the first fish, she told me to so she could watch how I did it. All of the fish that day just crushed the baits, with at least 2 sets of hooks in them. No way these beautys were coming unpinned! I cut and replaced hooks on every fish, and all swan away strong.

As far as the life preserver goes, she wore a PFD all day. My kids always do when the boat is under power. We took it off for the pics. Does that meet your approval Cory and MJB? I know you probably meant well, but considering you didn't know the facts, you could have made a separate post in general if you are so concerned about people wearing PFD's at this time of year. I would never put anyone in danger while in my boat, and it bugs me that you assumed I did.

Sorry if I offended you Shep. That was not my intention. I did not see one and considering what just happend to a friend of mine, yes I was alittle sensitive about it. I thought it would be better safe than sorry and mention how important it is to be extra cautious this time of year than to just keep my mouth shut.

good luck on the rest of the year, and again congradulations on your daughters first two.

Shep,

That's an awesome day on the water for anybody!  I'm glad you could enjoy it with your daughter and that she got her first fish!

A work buddy of mine got his first one last weekend (he's been out four or five times)... a 37" on a Big Joe.  Makes it all even more fun.

BTW, thanks for all your help on the boat topics.  You've been a big help as I got my Tuffy Renegade fixed up the way I like it.  Now after hearing your success, I'll need to figure out how to rig up for trolling  .

Cory,

No problem. It was a big day for my little Peanut, and she has no problem putting on the PFD, just like her seatbelt when in the truck or car. I always stress safety when in the boat, and while the kids do need occaisional reminders, they behave pretty good. Only problem we had Saturday was after the first hour or so, she said her toes were getting cold. As soon as she reeled in that first fish, she said she wasn't cold any more!

Yup, I am a proud papa. She actually goes with me more than her bigger brother, who got his biggest last fall at 39 1/2. She loves to drag a minnow on a slip bobber when we fish the summer on the lake. She even puts the minnow on herself. When we got back Saturday, she asked if we could go again, 'cept leave at 9:00 am instaed of 5:00!! Perhaps next weekend.

Way to go Shep. Great pics.

I told the wife I was taking Tyler this next weekend, she said, "NO".
What up with that? I hear they are bitting.

He at least is able to be by me when I'm on the board here.
