| Looking for someone who has used one this year and what they think? I may give one a try but want to make sure they are what they claim. Thanks,
Randy

Location: Suspended | I have one I got for Christmas and it casts as smooth as silk. Switchable clicker for trolling. The need for backing on superlines is optional because it has a small post on the spool to tie the line onto. I put in about 200 hours this year and have no complaints. It's my favorite reel. |

Location: NeverNever Lake | Smooth reel for sure! I guess I'm a little rough on my reels. I've replaced the ARB 4x and the AR Pawl 3x. The ARB in the TE is much smaller than the standard Calcutta's that why it has a pawl for a backup. I guess they knew it would fail. I thinkin mabye I need to move up to the 700 series reel. |

Location: Syracuse, Indiana | I have the 401 TE, and it is my favorite reel. I have about 2 years on mine. My only complaint is price, both new and for replacement parts. $28 for a new handle is steep (my youngest son misjudged a jump from a boat seat, landed on the reel, and snapped a paddle off the handle). I still wish Abu made a Morrum in a left-handed crank version. |

| My problems with the Morrum is why I am asking about the 400TE. I have always loved abu reels but for the price the Morrum isnt what its cracked up to be. I would pay twice the price for a reel that would at least last a few years without needing maintenance.

Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | I've done this mind exercise many times over. Is it worth the money for the Calcutta, should I spend the extra money for a Morrum. Time after time I go back to the old stand buy--the Abu 6501. I know they aren't the smoothest, they aren't the most reliable (although there service is awesome), but with my rod and reel rotation (six different rods and reels) I manage to use each about equal time throughout the year and seem to get over five years on each reel. Every year or so it seems like I upgrade a reel, but at $75 a pop it is much easier to do.
Just one cheap guy's opinion. |

| I guess with each individuals discretionary income being different, you buy what you can afford (or in the case of musky anglers, what you really, really, really think you need) For my money, I agree with Norm. Between myself and clients, each rod/reel I own gets about the same playing time as the next. I have two Calcutta 400's. Both bought new (2 months apart) and are now 3 yrs old. Both have gone in for repair (out of warranty)needing parts. Not a one of my Abu's have gone back yet, and one is celebrating its 9th birthday this year. Doing regular maintainence on them, all 6500's and I dont have a single complaint.
Just my two cents! |

You will never get a reel that you can use for years without maintence.
That is like saying, I want a car that I can drive for 100,000 miles without an oil change or new tires.
I isn't going to happen.
But yes, I do realize that there are people that have had their reel since 1989 and have had no problems, but take into consideration how often they fish and what they use.

| Whiteman, Raze...it is time to move up to the 700. the 700 TE Conquest has that lever, like a trolling reel. but the normal 700 TE has the push button cast function...i think i remember throwing some massive lures and landing a few nices fish on 700's this summer. The 700's come w/ a sweet Power Handle too...Raze, you are right, 700 is where it is at. they are nice and i prefer them over the 400's.

| I guess I not used to fishing with baits that average 3oz or more. I would think with just regular maintenance, oil and clean, that a reel should last at least a few years withouth needing major parts. Im going to give this new c5 a while and see how long it goes before I drop another $200+ for a reel. Thanks for the info. Tom.

Location: Chagrin Falls, Ohio | Hey Randy, I use the 300TE as well. I love it, and plan to replace a few of my 400's with 300 and 400TE's. They really shine if you're looking for distance with a spinnerbait, bucktail, or crankbait. But if you're throwing a big glide bait, I don't think there would be much benefit to it though. If you're looking for solid performance at a much more reasonable cost, I'd look at the standard Calcuttas. I have about 15, and they are really dependable reels. I've only had a problem with one so far. I love the TE, but I'm still having a hard time with the cost difference. If I can afford it I will proably replace only half my reels with the TE's next year, where it will make a difference. Good fishin', Tyler Campbell
