| Okay, I’m aware that dull hooks are both the cause of lost fish and maybe the easy way to identify a “not so experienced” angler. But, I believe I’ve discovered a use. Returning to Florida this fall I was reminded that salt air ruins everything made by man. Lures left in the boat over the summer look a hundred years old. Naturally, the other side of the story is there is a lot of fish in the sea. So, one day last week, literally tired of catching fish, I tied on a bait with literally no points left on the hooks. I still caught fish, but needed to really hone my skills to keep them on ( tight lines etc.). I also had to only allow a bit of slack to release fish, no net, no tools. I’d say no points at all is better than going barbless for catch and release and lots of fun getting better at the sport. Last, I still would like to see no hooks at all allowed for practice days before events. Let’s catch them during the tournament. | |

Location: 31 | In the mid-80s I was fishing the Angle area on Lake of the Woods with Fred Cairo and his guide Danny Gibbons. It was opening day, the first time I had ever fished with Danny or Fred and was surprised to see his Styrofoam bucket of beat up lures and rusty bent hooks that had never seen a file.
I asked him about sharpening hooks and he said it was actually better they were dull so that when a fish hits he doesn't hook it, and then one of us could catch it. I said that I liked that idea... we should just cut all the hook points off. He just smiled… | |
