Location: Roscoe IL | I have a few I can spare in my livewell. Don't mind helping if someone has a trip planned and no bait, been there and it stinks.
They were alive this morning and I have an airater running to help keep them going, hoping they make it until Sunday. PM me if anyone needs a couple. |

| I have been wondering about using hot dogs. Larry Smith used them to catch pike through the ice, and I have caught pike on them as well. I'm talking the el cheapo Sugardale hot dogs. Has anyone tried this on muskies? I was going to try them this summer but never got a chance. |

Location: Vilas | Do you use a quick strike rig on a hot dog?
What size hooks?
Maybe relish for scent? |

Location: Roscoe IL | The hot dog idea is funny. I remember when our muskie club was showing us how to rig up a QS rig. They used a summer sausage. Perhaps in a crunch? Add some cheese and you never know..

I’d go with a rotisserie chicken. |

Costco has good sized birds for $4.99. Cheaper than any sucker you'll find this time of year. |

I can actually find them for $5, not tax, leave the money in the jar. |

I tried a partridge on a quick set rig once with no luck. Still not ready to give up on that one. |

| I rig a hot dog like I used to rig smelt. I take the treble hook off the leader and stick it through the hot dog in the middle, and then put the hook back on the leader. |

| Hot dogs are not big enough for fall fatties, you need the full sized summer sausage.

| In Ontario you are not allowed to use game fish as bait. I am always interested in states where it is allowed. |

Location: Loves Park, IL | I know some guys use pan fish. I also heard it was illegal to use any game fish as bait. Travis Richardson used to use ciscoes he caught rigged up like suckers. Worked great. I can't remember if he netted them or what. |

| Back in the day I didn't run suckers up north. I would catch perch and hook them up to rigs. May take a little time to catch them, but they would probably work.
I also used bluegills, easier to catch, but I didn't get as many on them.
Someone said bullheads, and yah, I can see that. Never tried it, but could totally see that working. |

What is the reason for the shortage?
I was told winter kill by one bait shop. |

Location: NorthCentral WI | I was told the creeks where they trap them are high for this time of year which has resulted in dangerous/difficult trapping conditions. So, not actually a shortage of suckers just that they haven't been able to trap them as efficiently. |

| Question for those in the know:
I get the VHS rules for the most part. But would it be illegal to catch suckers in a river that flows into or out of the lake I want to use them on? It's easy enough to catch your own, and actually kind of fun. But does "transporting them away from the body of water where you caught them" apply when the two are basically connected? |

Yes it would be legal Jeff. The transporting them in quantities could raise a red flag but wouldn't be worth their trouble. Most states are now more worried about transporting the water then the bait itself. I'm sure pointer could give you the scoop.

I can’t really speak for Wisconsin or IL, but the issue as noted would be the water. You would need to bring your own water (from a bait shop and/or home). And I definitely wouldn’t transport them in your boat/livewell. There are also bait harvest regulations here that I’m not super well versed on other than taking from an infested water for any use isn’t allowed. Some of our more confusing regulations. |
