I finally got a boat and have become addicted. I live in Appleton and with 6 kids, I can't get away up north very often. Where can I fish within an hour and 1/2 of Appleton? I've tried Little Green, Elkhart and Green Bay so far.

Thanks,

John

PS - This is a great site

You should definitely hit Butte da morts (sp) and the rest of the lakes connected to Winnebago. There are some bruisers in there.

The cloverleaf chain near Shawano is a B rated group of lakes with clear water and good weed structure. About 50 minutes from Appleton. It has some nice fish but is definitely not an action lake.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't think the river going into Green Bay ices up until December or later. It hasn't been very cold here yet.

Butte des Morts is an interesting suggestion, I've always thought of it as a walleye lake. It's certainly convenient. It's pretty big water any suggestions on where to start?

I'll have to give the cloverleaf chain a try too...

Thanks,

John

You have to try ButteMortes, matter of fact, try the entire system. I nailed a 40" northern on Poygan last spring, so there is large pike in the Winnebago system.

I would try DePere, no doubt. We pick up a musky every spring snap jigging Zip lures for trophy walleye.

There's large pike throughout the system. I got plenty of 30"+ fish trolling Lake Winneconne last summer. Also snagged into some large sturgeon (60"). The local news paper said that there were muskies caught by the bass doods during the tourneys on Winneconne. They are out there. I know that Lake Winnebago holds muskies and big ones. Fish the west side where the reefs are.

Shawano Lake (and Washington Lake which is connected)is an up and coming lake that is starting to show some nice fish. You can fish the lake as well as the Wolf River connected to it. There are a few other lakes in the Shawano are as well, but I'm not too familiar with those. East Alaska Lake in Kewaunee county is also a nice lake to hit, but it can get crowded being it is less than 100 acres and the only musky lake in the area. Big fish in there though, and lots of tigers. Not sure how far of a drive it is from Appleton, but the Sturgeon Bay area of the Bay is also a place that you could fish. Definately trophy potential there.

Good Luck

More good suggestions. I went to a Muskie club meeting yesterday and several of the guys were talking about going to Shawano.

I looked at my Sportsman's Lake map book and they had a few spots for muskies on Butte, so I am going to have to try it too. Maybe if the weather warms up I'll make it this year.

Think I'd have better luck on a lake with cisco's, like Elkhart, or Shawano this weekend?

Two more lakes not mentioned is Little Lake Buttes Des Morts, and Big Green.
