| GregM came up to the Cass area today to try his luck...
Within the first hour he scores a 45" that ties his personal best....
A few hours later... He does it again! a super chunk 45"
His largest MN fish to date with VERY limited time on the water here...
Not too shabby Gregger!!! |

Location: Bagley,MN 56621 | Thx Guys and THANK YOU MR.CADY, what a day!!, unreal. My 2nd and third Minn spotted musky and all 3 are over 40, love those Minn lakes and fishing in the Fall.
I have been going overthere everychance I get the last couple of weeks. Driving 4 hours, fishing most of the day and driving the 4 hours back. There is this fish...the HMOG (Holy Mother Of God)fish we call it, seen first time last Fall the end of Sept. Seen her again this fall, not once but twice by either myself or Steve, hence all the driving.
I start throwing my infamous bluegill shallow-raider, if anyone knows me or fished with me Mr.Bluegill gets a lot of action for good reason, she caught me my best at 45" in 2002 and several others. Steve is throwing his Wabull, an awesome bait that acts just like a giant undertaker.
Not very long into the trip, we are both bringing in our casts at the same time, the 45 is right on his bait, as my bait is a few seconds behind, I make my first turn in the front of the boat, the fish turns off and nails me in the straightaway...chaos with 3 feet of line out!!
major hollering and screaming (from me), excellent net job, more hollering, high fives, measure fish, more hollering...very pumped Mr.Bluegill got another 45"er.
some gentle "ribbing" about stealing that fish but really,Steve said he would have pushed me in if I didn't figure 8 that fish, pretty good guy to fish with!! What would have happened if my cast was all done and the fish came in and I put the bait back in the water to 8 ?? dunno, sure was good timing the way it happened and I'll take it lol.
soooooooo, I put a new homemade leader on my bait, retie and am ready for action, not aking this bait off again EVER!! About 1/2 hour later, I cast it out, twitch it as usual 2 times and the line goes slack...??
thinking it got bit off (never felt a "thump"), i got a nick in an eye, line is cut?? I reel up and my leader is still there.....well it finally happened....was warned about it when I swithced from snaps to split rings, took almost 3 years to happen.......the split ring worked it's way off the leader.
GASP!! Mr.Bluegill, where are you?? sure enough he pops up...I eyeball him, turn the trolling motor and am dead ahead to get him about 20 yrds away....."Mr.Bluegill I'm coming to get you!!"....I turn away just for a sec, reach down and grab my small sucker net, turn around.....................................................................................GONE!!!!! WTF?? it was right there???
we looked and looked...never to be found, must have sunk. This bait had 1/2 the paint missing from fish and hooks, the characteristics of any favorite bait that someone else would think , what a piece of junk!!Actually think it must have had a hole in it cuz it suspended so perfectly when paused. Could have heard a pin drop........
A couple of follows and the thoughts of what this bait has done for me got my mood back to where it needed to be and we fished hard for the next few hours.
The wind got nasty and started stirring up whitecaps, I took a break to warm up the fingers a bit and put out a sucker with a Wolverine Big Bite quick strike rig, using the silver blade. About 20 min later in 10' with meat 4' down the sucker goes off. Reel down, set her and Uff, good fish!!
She stayed down and fought hard....Steve the whole time telling me "Big Fish, Big fish....it's your new personal best!!!"...me telling Steve "Shut up, don't tease me, get the #$@#%%^ing net"
scooped her up, what a dandy!! looked 47 in the net cuz she was a real porker. Well she measured another 45, didnt beat the last one but who cares, 90" in one day!! The yelling in the morning didn't compare to this one, think I even danced a little too haha.
We moved a total of 5 fish yesterday I think, no supertanker sightings this trip, but 2 awesome fish in the net and saw some nice ones about the same size and smaller too. Again also, MAJOR laughs in the boat with Steve. I like fishing in the fall with him when the water is 38-40 degrees and the 30 degree wing is howling, makes him keep his clothes on.
There is still life after you lose your favorite bait...so many tools for us to use. Just gotta keep pluggin. Hope everyone gets to chase some fall fatties this season yet and break or tie their personal best, what a rush!!

| WTG Gregger!!!!! And Cady!! And you were just telling me what sewers those lakes were! hehehe Sorry to hear about Troy, Greg. I know how much confidence you had in that bait. Perhaps it didn't sink. Maybe your third fish of the day ate it!
Cady!! Glad to hear you kept you clothes on! Great job putting Gregger on his two biggest fish this year!! How was the hook set, really. You can tell me! hehehe |

| The hook set...
hmmmm... I think as he was setting the hook he yelled "Here you go you dumb Shep...."
Then when he got the fish in the net he yelled!! "That fish is a dumb Shep!"
As he released the first one he yelled at it as it was swimming away... "That fish was full of Shep!"
Then he lost his Bluegill....
and said to his split ring... "YOU PIECE OF SHEP!!!!!!"
But the second fish came and all was forgotten again...
He set the hook this time and yelled...
"I'm not taking anymore of your Shep!"
Thanks for coming up Greg! Good laughs....sorry about the bluegill laughing but you should have seen the look on your face...

I can just see Gregger's face when Troy disappeared on him! What a Putz!
Wonder if I could talk the wifey into letting me make a run up with Gregger after Turkey Day? Think it will be iced up then? Be the only time I could get up there anymore this year. |

The first pic came out awesome, the second one didn't. It was cold...heavy and I got tired of moving and squirming to get the right angle so I let her suffer out of the water long enough and back she went.
It doesnt show it, but #2 was much fatter than #1.
awesome day.

As for losing your prized Shallowraider..... I'M SHOCKED! You mean your lure worked its way off a splitring????? (Major Sarcasm). Preposterous! Eliminating snaps and going with splitrings is 100% foolproof.
Are you considering returning to the "dark side" and using snaps again????

hate em, cant stand em...wont do it.
That split ring was the original on it from when I first started using that bait. I didn't pay enough attention, sure it was gettin weak.
note to self......change split rings on widely used baits!!
I was wondering when you would respond Jason, lol. You were the one who warned me.
thx guys, yup they were a blast.

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | ANY hardware can and will have little failures, including split rings. I have seen lures work their way into the wire on the ring, especially gliders, but have never lost one. I think Greg might have encountered a Ring Wraith, after his Prescious. If Gollum has the Bluegill, it is indeed lost. Sheesh. I do believe I have lost it. |

| I think I have convinced him not to over sharpen... To stop listening to Shep.... But coming back to the dark side and going with Stringease Stay-Lok snaps has been very tough. Stay-Lok stays locked. Even on large fish. |

Stringease all the way, baby!!!!!
Splitrings only provide false security.....
If you aren't working your lures off of splitrings.... you aren't workin' your lures hard enough!

Location: Bagley,MN 56621 | true, very very tough sell for me, especially since my bad taste in snaps didn't come from a snap opening, it came from a snap breaking.
it can stay locked all it wants, but if the wire itself breaks, the locked part thinger doesnt do diddly.........
Bucher split rings!!!! LOL>
my split ring can beat up your snap...neener neener LOL |

| Change the snap! Throw em away after 1 use. Your lure will be in the water ALOT more often. By the way Greg have you ever seen yourself get on a Bait changing kick? It's ugly... 3 casts per lure tops... and you own more lures than god.

| Cady, you need to learn how to take pictures. Either that, or GregM needs to learn how to hold fish for pictures. |

| He wasn't worried about pictures. I tried to coach him on the "head" shot but I just screwed up the pictures...A normal picture would have looked better but Greg's concern was for the fish.
Besides he fishes more than twice a year and will have many more chances. |

| Oh yeah one last thing.....
Greg has been learning the Bemidji/Cass area all year and has helped me get dialed in. In doing so he has agreed to start guiding the area as a fill in for larger trips with me next year. Think I've got him convinced to show off his home lake as well part time as a guide as well. If you are in the Rice Lake area look up the newest Musky Nut Guide..... Greg Morse

Location: Marshfield, WI | Just to let you know, that the day before Greg caught these 2 45's on Cass I fished with him on Rice Lake. Greg had 4 follows that day while I watched. The interesting thing is that it was the first time the two of us fished together, we were prepping his boat and he was stowing baits, et... and my comment was, "Greg, I have fished with guides who didn't have as many baits as you do." Well, I guess I was fishing with a guide!
Greg knows Rice. I thought I knew the lake, until I fished with him.

Location: Bagley,MN 56621 | Thanks for the kudo's guys.
Going to give it a go next year and see if I can't share what I have learned to some both newcomers to the sport and newcomers to the area.
HUGE emphasis on CPR also, not to the point of being a nazi about it, but more educational and of a gentle persuasion.
There are plenty of newbies that vacation here every year that try to give muskies a go. It should be fun to help shorten their learning curve and understand what and WHY cpr is all about.......have fun catching again and again and......
Always more to learn and figure out, I certainly don't have all the answers, but it sure is fun trying to figure them out and sticking one!! |

Location: Bagley,MN 56621 | p.s. I found 2 spare shallow raiders, life is good hehe.
interesting though that this is a special color to Rollie and helen's, obviously they didn't have one with Bucher being "lax" in filling the bait shelves lately, that when once back in full swing, the prospect of special colors from Bucher again was slim. |

| Yup,
Gregger is a good addition, Shady. Extremely fun to fish with, and takes every bit of crap I can dish out with a smile on his face! I learn something from Greg everytime we fish together. If he wasn't a good teacher, I wouldn't have had confidence to use that Shallow Raider to catch that fish with Heiting. Thanks Greg.
Oh, yeah. And that boat! How many notches do you have in the passenger side windscreen now, Greg. He got my hat on LOTW early on Sunday morn, as we screamed across King Island Bay! |
