Location: Kawarthas, Ontario | The post regarding baits that we liked/disliked this year got me thinking about selling my own baits. I've been making my own muskie baits for a number of years now. In fact, I've got to the point where I don't really fish with anything else. So I was wondering if I made baits to sell, how much should they sell for?
I thought I might start with two types: a 13" jake/grandma type bait, and an 11" jointed wiley type bait. Each would be cedar, have Mustad 7/0 trebles, a decent paint job and a tough epoxy finish. each bait will run 5+mph, the jake/grandma type bait runs about 22' and the wiley type bait about 32'.
I'm not looking for a career change, just to sell a few baits now and then. Normally I just sell a few each fall to my muskie buddies that I fish with. So the question is what do you pay for your basement baits?
Any and all comments appreciated. |

Location: oswego, il | I would have to see them. Paint job quality, ect. I would put some on ebay and see what they go for or look at something similar in stores. Jomusky has a basement bait section on his site, would be a great place to put them for someone to look at. |

Location: Holly, MI | 22 and 32 feet is mighty deep for me. When I troll it is in 10 to 16 foot of water. Lake St Clair in Michigan averages only 6-10 feet deep depending who you ask, even tho it is over 200,000 acres. The lures are also commonly trolled in the propwash only 5 to 10 feet behind the boat. If you made some straight and jointed wood baits in natural colors (perch, walleye, frog) in the 8 to 10 inch range I would probably buy some. The jointed would be the 8 inch and the straights 10s(for fall). They would have to stay down at 5 or 6 mph for sure and only run 3-6 feet deep. The shape would be like a wiley or a loke. Are you using stainless hardware, heavy duty? do you pre drill for screweyes and glue them in too? pm me if you can make somthing to this order. I won't pay the $20 each for wileys although they are good lures. I have caught fish on the musky stalkers (plastic by drifter tackle) and they can be bought for about $10-12 locally. I have one wiley currently and love it (even tho it has yet to produce) that I bought on eBay, but even there most go too high by the time you add in the outrageous shipping costs that some sellers want to charge to pad their retirement account. Can you post som pics. Lets get some orders sold so you have cash for the winter buying spree we all go on. |

Location: Kawarthas, Ontario | Okay, so I posted a couple of quick pics in my photo album (out2llunge). The pics aren't the greatest (poor lighting and no time to correct), but it will give you an idea of what they look like. By the way, the paint pattern may look simplistic/impressionistic, but I guess I'll need to tell the 48, 49 and 50+" fish that have come from this pattern over the last two years that.
The Chicago show is unlikely for me, I live in the Kawarthas (Ontario) and don't get any holidays when the show is on Thanks for the input so far. I'm not really an ebay user, so I don't think I'll go that route.
As for the hardware, it's heavy stainless screw eyes, lexan (1/8 or 1/4") lips, and heavy (but not 3X) split rings.
As before, all input appreciated. |

| Doesn't Divani have a few of your lures and could possibly give a review? I think $12-$15 is not asking too much for a 6" lure. $15-$18 for an 8" lure and so on. If you feel they are worth more, definately raise the prices. You'll soon know by customer responses, business, etc if your prices are correct. Simple color patterns are ok but you know that a lot of fancy color scemes attract anglers. |
