On our last trip we fished a clear lake and as a result did a lot of night fishing. Once the moon went down I had a very difficult time seeing the foot pedal on the trolling motor or the direction the trolling motor was facing - any one have a setup with a very dim, hooded red LED to make it a little easier? I already have the lights on the trolling motor base covered with tape because they are BRIGHT at night and made it impossible to see much of anything else.

Also any tips for figuring out when to start your figure 8?

I also need to get a new, shorter rear (white) light to make it easier for my buddy in the back of the boat to cast.

Thanks,

Shawn

Put a good red headlamp on and use Glowin' Outdoors tape on your trolling motor head and foot pedal buttons. The red headlamp, if it's a good one, allows you to see the bait about 10' out and it does not spook fish.

For the figure 8, I use a long tag end from a Trilene knot to tie a surgeons loop about 12 inches up and away from the leader. The knot is the indicator to stop reeling and turn into the figure 8.

a taller front light helped with the trolling motor deal for me.

fishing slower helped me with figure 8 after dark. Kind of just gets to be a feel deal, but be patient as it doesnt always work just perfect and thats ok

i still suck at night fishing lol

Do a search on "rubber bike light" and you can find a bicycle tail light that will strap on to any rails (or masts) you have. I have some white ones that point down at the deck for when I need them as well.

I thread my line through the rubber part of a rubber core sinker, just like you'd use a bobber stop. You can adjust it to wherever you like, and you won't miss when it hits the tip top.

Pat;

Does the red light attract bugs? A white light can be almost unusable many times at night. I too use the glow tape on my trolling motor head and foot pedals and that does a good job.

Nope, not at all.
