Location: Duluth | Last week up on LOTW, my buddies and I were all fishing Miles waiting for a front to move in. We thought we had about 15 minutes, next thing we know we all hear a fast loud vibrating noise. It was our rods, and clearly the air was super charged up. We stopped fishing and high tailed it out of there.
Anyone else ever experience this? |

| Friend of mine in the U.P. was fishing on Lake Gogebic, no storms reported in the area but when he and his partner would cast the line hung up in the air to the point the bait barely touched the water. He said it looked like the line had been cast over an invisible tree limb and the bait dangled under it. They got off the water but no electrical storm materialized, the front or whatever it was passed and they resumed fishing a couple hours later. |

Had this happen on the Gile about 20 years ago. Should have been back at the truck already but back then I was willing to risk my life. |

Location: 31 | 1997-8? after pounding it hard for 5-6 days on the Ottawa River I basically forced my more than reluctant boat partner Kenny to head out again before dawn. Because it was dark we couldn't see what was heading our way, but after 15-20 min. we could now make out this ominous cell bearing down on us... and also noticed our rods were humming with every cast. Yikes, we immediately pulled for shore and then took took it on the chin for almost an hour while the storm raged... with Kenny of course reminded me plenty that we could have been sleeping in. SUPER scary to realize we were just sitting ducks out there waving out rods around to help build a charge.

Location: Ames, Iowa | Couple years ago up on Leech my wife Tammy started to complain she was getting shocked when she touched her reel. I looked at her hair and half of it was sticking straight up. Storm was moving to the east what appeared to be well to the north. I had her put the rod down and sit in the bottom of the boat. I reeled in and we got the heck outta there in a hurry.

| This happened to me one time on the Chip. Walleye fishing using 4 lb. line. The line would not lie on the water. I never knew what it was. Spooky! |

You mean PASSED. It's hard to believe the resident grammar Nazi would make such an error, but he did. |

| Fishing Vermilion one time and a storm was approaching. I kept feeling those #*^@ flies biting the back of my calf. I looked back and there was electricity arcing between my calf and metal part on the seat. I said lets get the hell out of here! LOL! |

Location: Stevens Point, WI | I have heard of this too with carbon fiber, would like to know if there has been actual research into whether they are truly more of a lightning rod than say fiberglass or yourself for that matter. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence, from what I have been able to research it seems to depend on what it's mixed with since I believe pure carbon fiber is inert and anti-static. |

Location: Ludington, MI | My daughter and I were on a lake in Iron Co. Mich when I looked over and saw her hair standing on end. I got the trolling motor up and big motor running before I snapped a pic as I motored for shore. By that time it had started raining, but she still had wet hair standing on end. I don't know that I've been that scared on the water before. |

Location: Madison, WI | had this happen a couple of months ago. the front was moving in and temps dropped by 15 degrees or so and all of a sudden all everything in the boat was charged and shocking me... the front that came in didn't create any rain or lightning so wasn't expecting anything. definitely hightailed it out of there. |

When lightening hits a rod
#*#*. Got a story behind that picture?
I can only thing of one time we had anything like that. We had a storm rolling in that we stayed out in way too long. It was raining pretty hard and starting to hail. At the time, I thought I could actually feel my rod hitting the raindrops as I was casting. Now that I hear these stories I wonder if it wasn't that at all. We called it a day about 5 minutes later when lightning hit the shoreline we were casting towards.
Makes me wonder how close we've come to dying out there trying to get a few more casts in before the "bad stuff" hit.

| Was bass fishing and had a front move in, with lighting/storm in the far far distance. Heard some crackling, and didn't really think too much of it or tie it to storm at first. Then my spinning rod started zapping me where I rested my finger on the graphite blank! Every few seconds, I would get a shock. Other rods were making a clicking noise too. Assumed I was about to be hit or something, but no lightning ever struck close. |

EXACT same thing happened to me and my son fishing a mid-state lake when he was a youngster 18 yrs ago. Line barely made it to the water. I held the rod up and she crackled.
Can't tell you how fast I high-tailed it out of there!! Storm hit 15 misn later and it was a douzy!!
Scary crap!!

Location: Hayward, WI | I had it happen once fishing in Chippewa County. If I lifted my rod tip up it started to buzz. My baits did hit the water but had the line hanging in mid air thing going on. It was years ago, but I remembered reading about it on here so I headed out shortly after it started happening. I remember it being warm, cloudy, and very humid but I don't remember any kind of serious storm coming after, though it might have. Been chased off the water plenty so I don't quite remember. |

| Is there a name for this thing you guys are describing? Does it just happen in Northern States? I have never experienced this down in Ohio. It sounds interesting and scary at the same time. |

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Some years ago I was shoreline fishing muskies at Castle Rock Dam boat launch dock in late afternoon. The storm was not visible or audible. My line zipped up off the water from my Alien lure back to me, tingling in my hands. I turned & looked and far to the west I could see the storm. Headed for the truck and got out of dodge. Crossing the WI River on Hwy 82 I could see a massive storm hitting where I had been 8-10 minutes before minutes. Went back the next day, massive tornado damage, with trees down in classic funnel path. It swept right across the dam.
Super braid line is very conductive when wet. Don't be stupid for a fish!
This is worth watching.
