Is it the "Squeal" or the "Pop" or is it old age

When it comes to topwaters I have seen some of my older topwaters come out of the bait room years later and preform like superstars. Its my understanding that these old baits, have rusted clevises that squeal. Is that the extra sound that drives muskies crazy?

On some of my tail baits, the componants are rusted slightly and that also make them squeal louder. The top raider seams to squeal right out of the box, so is it the pop or the squeal?

These older baits bar none are some of my best producers. Does the squeal really make that much differance or is it just confidence?. [;)]

Rody Brekke, an old timer who was fortunate enough to experience the GLORY DAYS of the Chippewa Flowage, would swear on his grave that the "squeal" is the secret. TR has spent countless hours perfecting the "chirp", as Rody would call it, on his topwaters.

If you are a believer in sound, then you gotta try some of TR's Topwaters. He has some of the best Globe style baits I've ever seen... and they all "chirp". Calls them the Half Wit and Nit Wit.

Personally, I'm a "pop" kind of a guy as I feel it is the water displacement that brings up the fish... and a loud "pop" is made by LOTS of water being moved.

Sometimes it is hard to believe some of the stuff the "old timers" claim to be effective... but Rody has humbled me many times. Have any of you ever heard of "dipping" to replace the figure 8? I thought Rody was just getting old when he presented such a silly technique to our club... but it actually worked for me this year!

If it worked 30 years ago... it will still work today.

Dang,

The title of the post made me think you were asking how I sounded when I got out of bed in the morning. My joints pop, I squeel and it's gotta be old age catching up with me. :)

Personally, I think it's the pop.

Hey jlong! I'm interested in a description of this "dipping" thing you mention. I have used a technique a few times to trigger lazy followers that like to just hang out instead of chase a figure eight. Mostly a jerkbait/minnowbait technique, it simply involves pushing the rod into the water far enough to get the lure in front of the fishes' face and kind of working it in place, darting and twitching, until either the fish eats or leaves or I just get fed up and poke the unresponsive pig with my rod tip. Had one follow on this presentation for over a 200 yd. drift three weeks ago. Never did get interested enough to open her mouth though..............

We on the same page here or am I going to learn something new?????????????/
