| Found a little info in the archives but not much.
Got a new (to me) glass boat and was advised to add a keel protector.
The Hamby is recommended by the manufacturer. Any comments on that? Comparable alternatives?
And is the keel protector really a must-have? |

| Yes it's a must have, imo, and Hambeys is the only way to go. Should be about $5-600 installed. |

Location: midwest | I bought a new to me rig a few years back late 90's ranger without a keel guard on it and put a megaware keel guard on it. It been good and offers some good protection. Very easy to self install as it came with good instructions on how to clean and prep the hull. There is no doubt Hamby's makes an excellent product but there are other good products out there as well. |

Location: E. Tenn | Another "yes" vote.. A lot of the ramps in my area don't have docks, and you have to beach the boat after unloading, and prior to loading.. A small price to pay for the protection afforded.
The instructions are straightforward, and it might not be a bad idea to have an extra set of hands. |

Agreed. I haven't gotten around to putting one on yet but I have read about several brands. The bassboat guys rave about a couple different ones (I forget the specific brands.) While Hamby's is the most well-known and no doubt a great product, I'll be installing either a Keelshield or Keel Guard for half the price. Good luck. |

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like most of the failure stories I've heard resulted from imperfect installation, except that one of the brands had trouble with the padding disconnecting from the adhesive, and it sounds like the MFR fixed the problem.
I will be beaching my boat a lot, almost always on sand, but still definitely going to get the guard on very soon. |
