Location: Somerset, Ky | While fishing glider style jerkbaits i have the bad tendency to change sizes of lures based upon the depth of the upcoming structure. I have bought the straight wire leaders with Joe Buchers name on them and they seem to me to have very strong snaps. After catching a good fish today on green river lake in KY and realeasing the fish I saw that the snap was open. My question is, has anyone tested how many times the snap can be opened and closed before it becomes weak and may open. I am sure it could happen at any time with a really big fish but just a thought as to when to change leaders or snaps. I am just getting started so most of my questions may seem stupid but would welcome any ideals. |

| I make all of my own leaders, and the best thing that I ever did was to take the advice of other guys here on this board and got rid of all of my snaps and use splitrings instead. Every lure in my boxes, except for spinnerbaits and bucktails, has its own splitring attached to it. I take a lure off by sliding the wire loop off of the lures splitring and onto the next splitring. I've had snaps of all makes and models open up and weaken on me, but I have never had a splitring fail yet.

Location: Kentucky | Welcome SSKY, glad to see you on this site. I see you got another one out of Green. That's great! I think I will head that way on Monday and Tuesday. I hope the drawdown doesn't affect them to much. I think it's going to be a slow drawdown, so it shouldn't affect them much. Anyway, I was just going to say that I had the honor of going with Gregg Thomas on a trip to Green this past spring. He uses the system like Beaver talked about with only split rings attached directly to the wire. He talked about losing some monster fish because of snap failure and went to that system. Since fishing with him, I have adopted this method also. It takes a little practice getting use to it, but it works great. I keep my split ring pliers out beside my tackle and slide the lures right on.
I'm with you as to being fairly new at all of this, but you have found the right website for all of your question's. Also all of these guy's are excellent musky hunters and all 100% catch, photo, and release.

| I agree with Beav for the most part. I use mostly straight leaders and split rings on my stuff. But, I have found one snap that I have been using again lately. Its the Stringease brand. I have not had one open in the 2 years I've been using them. DaveJ turned me in their direction and I know he told me he's never had one open up either.
If you want to check them out.

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Hi Beav- I met Adam (Duke Snap) at the New London show last year. He has a website but it's under consruction. Just give Adam a call (715-497-3510 or 715-268-7124), he'll send you product cut sheets & prices. The snaps are really good- I personnaly think they're better than the Stringease. But that's just my opinion. I use them on all my leaders. As I said he has some innovative leader products and he also makes some nice bucktails w/ real gold & silver plated blades + some really cool colors for glow blades. Location: Davenport, IA | I use the stringease snaps and have had no problems. I use size 4. Some of mine are silver in color (lost all the coating) and have been used for a few months but still are strong. I have never had one open up on me either. I have had most of the other brands I've used open up on me though. (luckily it never cost me a fish, but you never know when they will strike) |
