In yesterday's Milwaukee Journal Sentinal, the business section had a huge article about Merc's new 100 million dollar project. The article went on to say that the engine is a 250 4 stroke and will be about $18,000.00 when released next Feb.

Does anybody know what they're naming it? As of right now all it's known as is Project X.

At that price, we should all be able to afford to buy one for the boat, and one for a buddy!

Pretty sweet motor!!!

Sounds like a really nice motor but how many of us here can afford 18K?

I need to win the Lottery

that price is inline with Mercury retail..but as Shep said............

a 2003 Merc retail price on a 225XXL EFI 4-stroke was $17,105, it's not out of line.....WELL not out of line with the pricing on their other motors.

When I think about it....I can replace my 250 HP truck motor, tranny, drive shaft and rear end for a lot less than that!

Just goes to show you....motor manufactures have you by the short hairs.....little hard to hit 50 MPH with no motor

I'd like to know what dealer cost is on these motors.

Cripes! That thing looks like it weighs 500lbs! I don't think a 20'er could support the weight...but it would be fun to try!

I believe the X motors will weigh a bit less than the Opti Max, so there should be no problem with rigging one up!

Sounds like a GREAT motor. I sure love my Opti Max and I am hope this new model rocks for Mercury.

Then question of costs is crazy in the boating industry. Boats like Ranger, Tuffy, Patriot, Lund, Crestliner are priced high as well as motors by Mercury, Yammaha, Johnson ect ect...It blows my mind to think of what you can get in a car or truck for the same costs as boats and motors. You dont even get a AC, heat, lush bucket seats or CD player. LOL

Toys are expensive....but without them we will go NUTS! and they know that.

SDawg,

If that motor only weighs 500, it will be an instant success. The 225 Honda weighs 635, and the F225 Yammyha weighs just a smidge less than 600. My 135 Opti weighs 480.

Jason, I got pretty comfy buckets in my boat. And I believe you can get CD players with most models now, instead of AM-FM Cassettes. I will be adding a decent stereo to mine over the winter, as the Boss stereo that came with it is junk.

Shep..your seats are nice, but they are not even close to the same type of comfort I have in my Chevy Silverado or your Ford for that mater.

LOL

Lets hope this huge monster is more reliable then my OptiCrap! I cannot believe we are paying $18,000 for a motor that comes with a 3 year warranty at best. I can buy a new car that has 1,000's of hours and 1,000's of parts more then that motor for the same money, oh and some of those cars come with 7-10 year warranties. The boating industry has been in a slump for years. If they ever want to get out of it they have to be engineering things that cost less, not more. The barrier to entry for a new boater is getting pretty steep.

Shep,

You gotta keep in mind my limited knowledge boat/ engine specs. I've only owned my own boat for a year now but I never dreamed a 2 stroke outboard in that size class weighed that much. Of course I know it (the new 4 stroke 250) will rock. Otherwise, they never would've put so much money into it's design. It's a very impressive outboard to say the least. SWorrall will be wanting one on his new Patriot I'd guess. (zoom, zoom, zoom!)

Those motors sound amazing. That X is massive I can't imagine how they got the weight down to 600 lbs. The ETEC line for Bomb. sounds very appealing as well. No battery to start them, magneto technology has come a long way. As far as the price of the X motor is concerned, I'm sure that if you'd get a few hundred thousand of your closest friends to go out and purchase one of each of all of Mercury's outboard models then I am sure you could get them to lower the price per outboard to that which is equivalent to your pick-up's motor and drivetrain. The same action would probably work for boats. I don't know the exact figures for the sales of each of these items, but I'd be willing to bet I'm fairly accurate with this assessment.

From what I've read, they pulled pulled alot of hardware off the new design, so it should be light. But man, that is a steep list price. Nothing new though.

I think I'll keep my boat for a few more years...

Good fishin,

Tyler

I think the real question is does the average sportsman really need a motor that big, sure it would get you around the lake faster but then you also need a bigger boat, bigger truck, bigger wallet.

I can just see some yuppie scum driving around the lake with one of these strapped to the back of his boat showing off his toys and buzzing people that are fishing, will they even hear him coming
