Location: Avilla, IN | All set on buying a new Tranx. I am looking for help on which way to go. This reel will have 50 or 65# braid and be used for throwing small buck tails up through and including double 8’s (No 10’s with this reel), in-line topwaters, small to medium cranks, small to medium musky sized spinnerbaits. I’ve read about guys using the 5.8 with a power handle, and others swearing by the 7.6 with paddle handles. Would the 7.6 hold up long term with crank baits and double 8? Thoughts??? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! |

| I throw the 300 7.6 with small cranks and tails and the power handle. No problems last 2 seasons so far. I prefer the 7.6 for small baits simply because of the extra speed I can get with out killing my self. The 5.8 is used for larger cranks and tails with a power handle. That handle makes the reel a dream to fish. |

| I use the 400 HG for everything except 10s, and I've never had any issues with it. |

Location: The desert | Hardly need a tranx to throw that little stuff. But if you’re dead set on a tranx the 400 would be plenty. Though I’d buy cheaper with what you’re throwing. |

| Something to think about... The weight difference between a 300 and a 400 Tranx is negligible. I would get the 400 in the gear ration you want...

| from a durability standpoint, my 300/400A has held up great the last two seasons throwing mainly 10's. There are no durability concerns with what you intend to throw.
I would, however, go 65lb for versatility. I've also found that the thicker lines dig into the spool less on those rare backlashes. That's why I primarily run 100lb masterbraid |

Location: MN | The 300 and 400 use the same gears and handles - only difference is spool size. If they both feel comfortable, there's no reason not to go 400. OTOH, if the smaller 300 is noticeably more comfortable and you don't plan on running 100+ lb braid, there's no reason not to go 300. Neither is as robust as the 500.
FWIW, I have a fleet of the 300 hgs. I can't find another reel that has the right combination of handle length and line pickup combined with comfort. They do wear out and break, but seem to last longer than the other low profile reels I've tried (Abu NaCl, Beast). I use them for all casting - over 50% of the time it's double 10s or double 12s. |
