Location: ITALY | going to musky you often catch random catches? how do you react? are you happy anyway or are you disappointed? in the last 2/3 years it happened to me several times fishing with big bait to do walleye, it seems there has been an important population growth....
For example this walleye 37.5" I took it with a pounder

| 37.5" walleye? Is that a typo or for real? Either way congrats on a very nice fish. I have caught some big accidental fish while fishing for muskies. 46" northern pike, couple 27" walleyes, and a couple 5 lb. + largemouth bass. All fun to catch. |

| Yes and I welcome this, variety the spice of life (IMO). Hey a few 5 to 6 pounds bass or the occasional 5 to 8+ pound walleye, oh yea. The one thing is when fishing for larger esox I don't catch many dinks. I've been surprised at fish biting not much bigger than the bait, even rockbass have it 9" baits, they can be aggressive. |

Location: oswego, il | Some people are.very disappointed in catching another species while musky fishing. I don't mind. The way the Muskies ate baits on lotw last year(see Musky Hunter with Bill Sandy for an example). I was glad at least the nice pike would eat as they aways do.

Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | Aside from a big pike, catching trophy fish of other species on Musky gear just destroys the thrill. You could take a 20+” smallmouth or a 28” Walleye and twirl it around at the end of your rod like a rag doll ...

| happened this summer. raised a high-40's fish. 2 casts later my pounder got smoked. 36" pike. I KNOW for a fact that muskie talked him into it.
that's the level of education we're dealing with on Tonka right now... |

Location: Eastern Ontario | More than a few big smallmouth and walleye but was really surprised by about a 10 pound lake trout . I was trolling a Quebec Train on the Larry and was having a hard time getting the rod out of the downeaster thought I had a monster maybe even The One. Turned out the fish had the front hook in the mouth and the back hook snagged between the dorsal and the tail and was being dragged sideways. |

It's real .... it's not the first one I catch of that sin size that does not have a big defense ... regarding the size I think it grows a lot more than your walleye ... if you like it I'll give you some other photo |

Location: Foley, Mn | I do about as much Walleye fishing as I do Musky fishing and the reaction to the random catches are different depending on the targeted species. If we're walleye fishing and catch a big pike or bass that puts a smile on your face because they are pulling drag and it takes some skill to get them in the boat. When you catch them on Musky gear its not as special because the fish simply are too small for that gear.
The fun part of catching the random fish while musky fishing is those fish are typically large and if you were actually targeting that species you wouldn't use the tactics that just caught you that fish. We have caught many 26-30" walleyes on DC8's fishing shallow weeds early in the season and all of my smallmouths over 20" have been caught while musky fishing. |

No walleye they don’t grow nearly as large same with our pike. |

| The US has zander in one lake in North Dakota, Spiritwood Lake. Mr. Cicciospin are you familiar with Esox cisalpinus or Esox aquitanian pike. It is my dream to catch both, before my cancer make me unable to fish. Which unfortunately looks like is going to happen sooner rather than later. Sounds like they have huge zander in Italy, that would be a great bonus fish. I know a fair amount about hybrid muskies and purebred muskies which I would gladly share if you ever decide to make a trip to the US. I recently joined The Pike Anglers Club even though I'm not a great pike fisherman. I'm hoping someone there is familiar with the two European species. I tend to catch my largest largemouth and smallmouth bass while muskie or hybrid muskie fishing. |

Location: oswego, il | While I am hopeful to always catch a musky, quite often our personal best "other" species can come by way of musky fishing. My PB lm, sm, pike and dogfish have come this way. Here is a 21.5 smallie, I have 3 this size all musky fishing and a 44" pike on very very cold December day.

| When you finally put hooks into something after hours on the water and see a smallie or a pike at the end of your line there is a bit of a let down. But then my biggest pike of 38" and 41" were caught while muskie fishing. By biggest LMB of 22" was intentional, but I caught it doing figure 8's after it missed my lure several times on a straight retrieve. Several smallies up to 20" on topwater while muskie fishing as well.
I think about the guys out there who never caught a 22" LMB or a 41" Pike while targeting them and I think "Why complain about that?!"
These days, I hope for a pike or 3. If it's around 25-26", all the better. Into the livewell they go. |

| pike are only good for making tiger muskie
However an eating size incidental walleye is always welcome because it won't get released. |

| Pike are a slight letdown when muskie fishing, but the 40.5 inch pike I caught while chasing muskies was the biggest fish caught in our group during a week trip. So it was a great bonus fish. |

| I figure it's a bonus as long as it's something I'd fish for otherwise. Snagged a carp in the tail once ripping a grandma. Had to be 30#.
First thought: "Got 'em!"
Second thought: "It's a BIG %^$&er!!"
Third thought: "This things going to break my rod..."
Fourth thought: "50"? 50#?!!"
Then I saw the scales...
Fifth thought: 'Ya gotta be kidding me!"
I still can't believe some guys don't eat pike....

HappyHooker...you should try that sometime...no worry about y bones as I believe they dissolve when you pickle the fish, and with crackers....oh man....my mouth is just watering thinking about this....

In my case, I never learned to properly filet them, get the y bones out and still keep most of the meat. It bothers me to kill a fish and not make good use of it. This winter I have watched a couple of you tube videos and hope to keep a couple in the upcoming season. I think pike tastes better than walleye, just need to do a better job of preparing and minimizing the waste. Late last fall I spent about 4 hours casting then switched to trolling and in 2 hours boated three nice pike which I released. Was kicking myself that at my advanced age, I still didn't know how to properly filet them. Hope to change that. |

Location: Ashland WI | As soon as the ice goes out of the bay, most of the guys around here are trolling for salmon/trout. I like pike as well, so I head for the shallow, warming sloughs and cast for them. Much more enjoyable (for me) than trolling, and I really like to eat them as well. |

when the ice goes off, you fish the hot pond at all for walleyes? I know it can get crowded there, but man that can be fun...
I've done smallies one time up on the sloughs... Good time there as well..

I did this exact same thing with a Mag Double Dawg and a 3-foot carp... Greatest 40 seconds of my fishing life... until I saw scales... (now surpassed by the 49.5 musky I foul hooked in the middle of its back near the Dorsal Fin that peeled line off a locked down 500 PG Tranx like it was 404 Zebco)

I usually stay out of the chaos around the hot pond. I troll a bit for walleyes after the spawn and they have moved out to the 12-14 foot range. |
