Location: Minneapolis, MN | Ralph Florio has great success with a homemade rig that looks a ton like the Land-O-Lake's rig. Very small jig head in the cheek meat of the sucker (not the lips) then a single trebble attached to the sucker with a rubber band rather then poking the sucker. He puts a thin correctly sized rubber band over the sucker's head and slides it down to about the dorsal fin. Then he slips the shank of the treble under the rubber band. Very little damage to the sucker, very easy to snap the hooks free from the sucker. |

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Luke believes that the jig should be put in the cheek so that the front hook rips out of the sucker easier, I dont know if I agree or not, but thats the theory.
And for the record, the "Ralphie Rig" that Lukie described has THREE contributors, idea wise that is:
Rubber Band: Ralphie
Land O' Lakes Type Set Up (baby jig on the lip, single treble): Slamr
Cheek Meat Hooking: Luke

Location: oswego, il | I make my own liftoff rigs out of flourocarbon and assemble them as necessary to fit the size sucker I am using. I use a smaller 1/0 or 2/0 hook or two hooks and there is not alot of slack in the rig this way. My hookup success is really good and I don't have to fall down in the boat with a rod breaking hookset either. |

Basicly I was using a version of the maina lift off rig, maybe I just had some bad luck on the first two.God knows if you bat .500 your doing good on quick sets. Maybe I will get the next two.
The ralphy rig sounds interesting with the jig not in the lip of the sucker. HMMMMM |

Location: Racine, Wi | I was using the Herbie rigs this weekend and missed 3 fish. On one of the fish, the crimp came apart. That hurt as that was a 45" class fish. Are the Maina rigs tied or crimped? I think I will be making my own from now on. Any tips on what knot to use with the florocarbon? I have no idea how to tie it. |

Location: Germantown & Land O Lakes WI | This may sound odd, but BESIDES the Mania and Land O Lakes rigs the rig(s) I have the most success with is Fireine, jigs, sucker minnows, perch and slip bobbers....thats right, walleye tackle has boated me wayyyy more fish than suckers rigs. Sure I lose fish boat side, but it's amazing to watch a musky take my jig or bait 3-6x before landing him. Slip bobbers baited with perch work well too...I use the largest Gamakatsu Octopus Circle hooks and apply pressure as soon as I see my float go down...Boom! Right in the side of the ski's mouth.
I seriously recommend using a "smaller bait" approach along with a sucker rig.....if a musky trys taking your perch or sucker minnow a couple of times....toss in a big sucker. This method allows me to find fish without wasting suckers...because evrybody knows that casting, pulling it in...casting, pulling it in....etc takes it's toll on suckers. Unlike "summer fishing" muskys usually come back thier bait again....Ive seen the same fish hit my slip bobber rig 6X before nailing her on a 13" sucker rig. |

| Wasn't it Capt. Larry that described his homemade QS rig last fall that he was going 100% with? I know last fall also, Steve Jonesi said he was 13/13 with the Mania Lift Off Rig, it'd be interesting to see where the numbers stand this year for him.

| Sorry guys, it was 7islands who post it (don't have a clue why I remember that specific post):
"The quick strike rig that we are using now was developed last year by Cal Johnson from Presque Isle.It consists of a 30" length of #100 test flourocarbon with a barrel swivel at one end and a 3/0 to 50 treble hook tied to opposite ends.A small hole is made in the side of the suckers lip section and the barrel swivel is passed through it and attached to the snap swivel on your line. The hook is attached lightly through the suckers skin near the dorsal fin.
When the hook is set virtually all the power is transferred directly to the hook.In the test phase last fall We went 22 for 22 from oct 15 to nov20.All of these hooksets were from deepwater and in my boat the hooksets were done by clients with limited experience using quick strike rigs.It is simpler to rig the suckers this way,the suckers last longer and are more lively in the water as the rigs are minimally invasive. The flourocarbon really disguises the the rig. We had no bite offs last year, but they could of course be tied with seven strand if someone wanted too.Russ Smith at Smitty bait Company wil custom tie some for you if you call him.Give it a try this season. I think youll like it.
Interestingly the sucker bite in our area was very lite last season, but we noticed a definite increase in hits and the 100% hook up rate as soon as we switched to this method. The rig was featured recently on the Travis Richarson TV Show a couple weeks ago.As steve mentioned in His post this is also a great way to rig and twitch live bait with some slight modifications.

| This year started out with a fizzle!Don't fix it if it isn't broke!SLAMR and I hit the water yesterday and missed 3 fish on meat while boating a 37". For some reason, I bought a couple other rigs to try as I've been hearing and reading about them for years. I'm sticking with lift off rigs. Didn't miss a fish last year and 1 for 4 this year so far after 1 outing with meat.I think I stick myself more with the Maina rigs but I stick more fish with them too.Lesson learned. I'm leavin' the dance with who brought me!!!!!!Maybe it's a confidence thing. I know others that stick a lot of fish on the other rigs. Steve |

Location: Illinois | A question for Todd M. Have you had any problems with bite offs using the fluorocarbon? Does it nick up? Also, do you go heavier when making the rigs. I generally go 80 pound for trolling but suckers are a different story. I tie my own using Tyger leader with a small, straightened aberdeen and a single treble. I pierce the aberdeen down through the top of the lip. The hook pulls out easily and gives direct contact with the treble. I would be lying if I said I haven't lost fish with this rig but the percentage is pretty high.5/7 |

Location: Bagley,MN 56621 | Boy does that 7 Island rig sound simple as heck. No more futzing with different size rigs and fumbling when in the cold adjusting and trying to get 3 hook points in the sucker.....one rig fits all suckers.
I assume you would put weight up pretty high on the 30" leader? This would give the sucker lots of free motion??
The only problem I have is with the fluoro getting crosswise in the mouth, then setting the hook, having the fluoro slide until the hook point stuck.
This stuff is really that nick/tooth/abrasion resistant?? |

| Yes it does sound very simple Greg. I'm sure you could also use a rubber band around the dorsal to hold the treble instead of stabbing the bait. Do you guys get your rubber bands from someplace special? Are the ones for braces weak enough to break easily?
Thanks,
MJB

Location: Illinois-Indiana | I don't know where you guys (Luke/Slamer) saw a jid head, but it wasn't on the Ralphie Rig, and yes, I do put a single hook in the "LIP" of the sucker.
I will try and get a picture of my rig and post it. |

While you've been "busy" out east, we have been re-engineering your design.
Where do you get the rubberbands to fit the suckers? |
