Looking at both engines (225 optimax and a 250 optimax), they are the same size and displacement, so one is detuned from the other. chances are, they are very close in HP range. If memory serves me correctly, manufacturers must be within 10% of the HP rating they give the motor, so when you consider the 225 and the 250, chances are they are both probably within 10 to 15 hp or so from each other with the 225 being a touch higher than rated, and the 250 being a touch lower than rated. I say this with my tongue firmly placed in my cheek, though, as tolerances these days are much tighter with design and injection methods as compared to the carbed 2 strokes out there.
I would think with the size of the motor you are looking at here, a 225 would not have a substantial difference in performance as compared to the 250. Propped right, it will perform quite nicely with maybe a loss of 2mph top end as compared to the 250, and low end grunt will be nominal difference as well

| Steve is correct above except the Optimax 225 is about 225 at the propshaft, a pro xs Optimax 225 is about 235-240 at the propshaft. A Optimax 250 is 250, and a pro xs Optimax is about 268 at the propshaft.
Probably 1-2 mile per hour slower at wide open, whole shot probably the same because it will have 1" less pitch while keeping the same displacement | |
