It's starting to get chilly. Anyone every used a Mustang survival suit or worn a wetsuit while fishing? I'm usually in a small boat or canoe. Looking for an economical way to have added protection in case I go for a swim in cold water.

Have thought about wetsuits made for surfing that are designed for arm movement. Any other good ideas or brands?

Don’t fall in. Avoid cotton.

My brother in law is a commercial fisherman in Alaska. I checked out his Mustang survival suit when I was there last year and while it is great piece of work, cannot imagine paddling a canoe for any amount of time while wearing it. Bulky, very warm.

I have a Mustang Atlantic Class great for trolling in Nov/Dec if you go in it will float you but I can't imagine swimming any distance. If you can't get out fairly quickly on your own or with help your family will have a body to bury. I tried it ice fishing and it is too warm with any physical activity.

I spend a lot of time working on the water in the winter months. I use Mustang's Survival Suit but as others have stated, they are bulky and you lose some movement with them. If you weren't paddling a canoe you should be fine. I also have one of Mustang's 'Float Coats.' Its essentially a warm jacket with a pfd built in. I have used it several times while in a kayak and never felt like it slowed me down. It won't give the protection of the survival suit but it will keep you above the water.
