Muskie color variations

I have been so lucky to have been able to go around the US and Canada and catch muskies from many different areas. I really get a kick out of the color variations. Besides clear, spotted, and barred, there are so many more to choose from the depend on the waters they live in.

Here is some exsamples:

Sumo lake muskies in NE Wisconsin are coal black, quite ugly I might add. Moose lake in Mercer comes a close second in uglyness in my book.

Wisconsin river muskies are dark brown with little color and big bulging eyes from trying to see in all that silt.

Escanaba Lake muskies in northern Wisconsin are emerald green and clear.. Very sharp.

Cave Run KY fish and Lake Kinkead fish in IL are white as a ghost.

Leech lake MN spotted sows are very nice, white with big spots down there sides.

Pewaukee in WI and Loon lake in IL have some very sharp emerald green and barred fish.

Its neat to see so many different color variation of muskies sometimes in the same lake. I have fished lakes in Canada that had both spotted and barred fish. The spots were always fatter I might add.

Which is your favorite color variation, and what have you seen in your travels when it comes to color changes due to certain feed and water claritys?

Silver lake muskies are marked quite beautiful as well. Fox chain fish have some markings but not as much so. The "O"ther lakes by you have nicely marked fish too.

We have 3 different patterns just in our river here.

We have the nicely barred ones ( weedfish )
We have the clear ones ( deep fish )
We have gold ones ( deep fattys )

They also have spotted ones in the other section but I have seen one here.

Our clear fish are bronze backs with green sides and our gold ones have bronze backs and beer colored sides but are always fat ones.

Our weed fish are the nicest looking ones and the gold ones are the uglyest and the clear ones are in between but will always take an ugly 30 pounder.[:sun:]

I also fish Pigeon lake and find the fish there quite pale almost silvery in color.[8)]

Jason,
The Pelican lake original strain were clear, kind of a copper color with no markings or just a few faint bars on the very last part before the tail. Since the heavy stocking efforts in the 80''s and 90''s that strain is nearly gone, replaced by a pretty barred fish. Both seem to grow at about the same rate, at 12 they are about 48 to 49".

my favorite? Great Lake strain. Pretty, think they can fly, and like shallow water...crazy jumpers!

My favorite looking fish comes from Lake Minoqua. They are very heavily bared, naturally fades a bit as they get bigger but still fairly heavy.
For an example see the picture of my dad on my fishing pictures page 1 on my site. It almost looks like a tiger.
