Was running my terrova last nigh at ten just sliding over to a new spot and it shut down lost all power. I just put it on a new boat. Motor has only been used a half dozen times. I used the snap together fitting as that was already wired into the boat. The side going to my motor was burning hot but the wires from the batteries was not. Is there a fuse in the motor ? Could not get power back to it. I have an in-line fuse off the batteries going to check that this am. Thoughts? Thanks

If you have an 80lb Terrova at max draw they pull 56 amps. MANY MANY connectors out there are not rated for that many amps therefore they get hot and the connection drops out or even can smoke the plug which sounds like you did? The reason you TM wires got hot was because of the resistance in the plug.

If you can check to see what your plug is rated for and if it is not more than 56 amps you probably need to change it out to one with a higher rating, even on a new boat. (Several of us have done this)

The battery tender plug is what I installed when I had the problem as well as several others on here and this fixed it. When I got mine it was rated for 100 amps but they may have changed that. I also believe Marinco has now come out with a higher rated plug too.

Thanks! I am going back to the plug style I had before the big round one. That flat one is a 50 plug. The one you sent me in the link is also a good one?

don't know what your rig is but with my 2017 lund 1875 impact came with a 50 amp factory installed in-line breaker. my 80# ultrex minn kota called for a 60 amp breaker. i think you overheated the breaker and it kicked out for awhile until it cooled down? i've never come close to overheating mine, never run it higher that 6. its a light boat. going to switch to a 60 amp in-line someday if my fishing style changes. good luck................

That Battery Tender plug is the best one on the market. It’ll take up to a 4ga wire...maybe even a 2ga. Most other “heavy duty” plugs won’t take that thick of wiring so you are forced to tie in smaller wires just to get the plug wired. Not with this one. It’s rated to handle 80 amps continuously so you’re good there....and the way it’s designed means it will never ever vibrate out. Other “heavy duty” plugs that twist in will make that type of an anti vibration claim but they aren’t as secure as this one is.

The advice above is all good. Btfish above coached me through my upgrade. My 80 lb Terrova would shut down of I was working it hard too. 1st thing I did was change out the 40 amp breakers that were in my boat for 60 amp Minn Kota breakers. Still shut off.

Then I upgraded my plug to the Battery Tender plug. Awesome plug compared to the stock Marinco. Still kicked out.

This year I upgraded the stock 8 gauge wire for quality marine grade 4 gauge wire. Heavy duty stuff. I have not been able to get the motor to shut off on it's own since! It also steers much faster under high power as well.

Maybe all I'd have had to really do is upgrade the wire. Not sure. But I know I had Marinco plug failure at one point and they aren't cheap. I don't see the Battery Tender plug failing.

You could do each upgrade step by step and see if you don't need them all. But after upgrading my plug, breaker, and wire, I now worry much less when I'm working upwind of a rock pile on LOTW in 20 mph winds.

Tucker is correct, that’s what probably needs to be done. Wire it in series, install a higher rated plug, 60 amp breaker, we used 4 gage (because that is what the amp draw versus run length chart) speced out, never guess. Crimp and soldier all the connections.

I also did one more thing. I installed a very heavy duty marine grade on/off switch between the + & - connection so I can kill the power when I am charging. The reason you want to kill the power when you are charging is to prevent a voltage spike (that can happen anytime the line voltage to your charger drops and then bounce back up. This can be caused by a storm, well pump, refrigerator, etc.) from hitting the trolling motor which can wipe out the mother board.

So it is very important you kill the power to your TM when you are charging.

I also installed that same shutoff switch on my big motor so I can kill the power to the power trim so it doesn’t accidentally activate and burn up. But that’s another thread....

Several of us have done this upgrade, it will cost roughly $200 but it will be rock solid.

Feel free to contact me if you need help or have a question.

If only the TM is being run by the batteries, will unplugging it do the same thing as on/off switch?
My 617 Ranger came with 2 Perko style on/off switches but my little river boat is a direct connection to the TM plugs.

Yup. Unplugging it would be the same as switching it off. I get in a bad habit of not doing that, but the Battery Tender plug is easy to plug in and unplug.

Thanks guys got the new plug and everything is GTG. Installed a much higher amp inline fuse as well.
