Some time ago I bought a St Croix rod that had a flaw in it's construction that I did not notice until recently. The black butt cap was glued on crooked. It does not fit square on the cork. Do you guys feel it's possible to heat the black butt cap with a hair dryer or other heat source to loosen it and then re-seat it against the cork? davemp

Since the EVA butt cap is epoxied on, adding enough heat to loosen the epoxy may melt or deform the EVA. If it bothers you enough to want to change it, I would suggest using a razor blade, and cutting the EVA off. Carefully, cut slowly at the EVA/cork joint working the razor as you rotate the rod. Once you get down to the blank, the epoxy will be holding the EVA to the blank itself. To save the butt cap, grab firmly, and twist it off. Hopefully it comes off without too much drama, and doesn't break. Sand, re-fit, and epoxy back on straight. If you don't want to save the cap (or it breaks during the previous step), then cut it off, and epoxy another on. Very similar butt caps can be purchased from Mudhole Tackle. I don't bother trying to salvage them, as it is time consuming, and most of the time don't come off without breaking. Feel free to PM with any questions.
