Should I be soaking a sucker while casting at night?

Should I have him closeto the boat on the retreive side or further out or trailing the boat?

My thoughts (this is my first shot at casting for muskies in the dark) were to have the sucker a couple feet below a bobber with the reel on freespool and a clicker "on". Is this right?

You could definitely do that. Something to consider is putting a little hardware on the sucker. Maybe a blade off of the tail. I would say one on the leader, but the fish may hit the blade rather than the meat. Keep it close to the boat as well. The fish can find it easier that way.
Good luck!

Hearing that clicker scream in total darkness sounds likr a real rush. Make sure you bring a fresh diaper.

I'll be hearing it tonite in my sleep, can't wait!

I'm going to put one of those little break it/shake it glow sticks on the top of the bobber in case it just starts wandering around slowly.

Nothing like felling the strike but the screaming reel sounds like a rush for sure.

Definitely bring the fresh diaper. If you've never caught a musky at night at boatside, you'll need it. Come to think of it, even if you have caught one at night at boatside, you'll still need it.

Lobi,

Night fishing can be very successful as long as you take the time and be very careful. Keep one rod out and make sure the boat is FREE of clutter, the last thing you want to do is step on a rod or something.
Make sure you have a good flashlight and a headlamp is a MUST.
As far as the sucker goes, keep it close to the boat and I would drag her from the opposite side that I'm casting from (less chance of getting tangled up). Keep all your release tools nearby and be ready for anything, the night can be challenging especially when you can't see a thing.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

The local bait shop does not have anything bigger than about 6-7 inches. I hope this will work. I was hopeing for somthing much bigger.

Should I cut some of the tail off like we do for pike tip-ups so they have to work harder to swim?

ZIP Zero Nada ! Two nice toilet flushes but no bend in the rod.
Gave 'em hell but they gave it back. Casted from 9pm until 3am.
No taps on the soaking sucker either. Was new moon but the day after a long hard cold rain (big storm). Was 40 degrees out tonite, major heavy fog on the water from the cold air. Heard a bunch of Coyotes and saw a ba-zillion stars including 2 shooting stars. No fish but a great night to be on the water.
