When i cast my Topraider out, sometimes it sinks and takes a few pulls to start up. It also tilts to the side on the retrieve. I am using flourocarbon for leaders. Will straight wire fix the problem?

Not an expert on Topraiders but I wonder if it's taking on water. Seems it would take a heavy leader to actually sink one.

there is a triangular lead weight upfront on bottom if you hit a rock with it little tabs that hold it in place can break and it comes loose. that can cause bait to run improper there is a way to fix it by drilling a 5/16 hole on top between the eyes drip some crazy glue set it back in place with a small screw driver let it dry for a bit then foam fill and your'e done

Or buy a fat bastard... not helpful I know, but they are way more durable in my experience.

All newer bucher products tend to take on water. I fixed my shallow raiders and top raiders by drilling a hole in the body and filling with expanding foam. They all work perfectly now

If you feel fast they will run to the side, a couple turns doesn't seem like an issue either.

What are good shallow Raider and Depth raider alternatives? Shouldn't have to modify lures right out of the box!

all the lures of lee tauchen make some plop plop . not cheap but his lure reputation have been made since years.most of the topraider i have fish with were good out of the box. im not sure if the one that was spinning was from pre ro ,ro or post. im sure some guys could give you a better answer about the topraider. but my feeling is pointing toward post robert outdoor

I have to modify many baits to get them to run just right i.e. Rapala's, Suick's, not just the Bucher baits. Its a bit of a pain. But if you want the bait to stay true (horizontal) when paused it's necessary.

The only "problem" I've ever had with topraiders is my tendency to cast them a country mile after 4-5 hours of throwing double 10's. That usually puts them well up on shore, 30 feet up a tree or smashed against a rock. If you hot a rock with one, you will knock the weight loose as others have described above.

That said, I don't think they're of any less quality than other tail props. They're a little more finicky as far as what speeds you can work them and occasionally having to tweak the tail a bit. But there are days where a pacemaker or a chopper, etc shows no color and topraiders get whacked. Why? Only the fish know.

I have 3 problems with the last 3 topraiders I purchased, which is disappointing as the one I am trying to replace had caught many fish before it stopped working right. Two of the new ones had internal weights that came loose within the first 10 minutes of fishing and caused them to roll. The last one lost all the paint in about the same amount of time. I have given up with topraiders, there are many other choices of top plops out there now and most hold up much better.

Lot of American manufactured Prop baits that have a much better sound than Topraiders. Buy 1 quality bait instead of having to buy 5 Topraiders to get 1 to work.
