| Buddy got this a couple days ago, he's wondering after the fact if it is a tiger. I know about pores and fin profile, but all I saw was this pic. My first notion was no, because body of water has no northerns or natural reproduction. But interested in the opinions and expertise of esox nation.
Is it possible that tiger fingerlings get intermingled at dnr hatcheries or private fish farms?

| This looks like a Tiger Muskie... to me, sir... but, it might not be. Nice fish.

| The reason I believe it may be a Tiger Muskie is the shape of the head... and the back portion of the body. The shape of the head and the tail resemble what you usually only see in Tiger Muskies. The width between the bottom and top of the fin is also very tall... along with what can be consider a larger than normal dorsal-fin. Pure Muskies are simply shaped, differently. |

| Tiger Muskies are a fairly popular aquarium fish... and some people release them into lakes and rivers when they out-grow their tank.
Here is a graphic of the key features I am looking at...

I call that the heart attack build. We do a different form of CPR than what is frequently talked about here.
We could probably get him down to a 12 pack.... |

| I appreciate the constructive and informed responses to the initial legitimate inquiry. As for those who felt compelled dilute the dialogue with abusive comments about a person's physique, thanks for reminding me how a few Sweetness bags have steered me away from this site before. Grow the nope up! |

Lots of good information still to be had here.

What type of lure and technique was he using? Just curious. Like so many others, I've caught them on anything from high dollar glide baits to skirted bass jigs. I had to ask, though, because every now and then you get a surprise answer. A few years back, Idaho's state record was caught on a little trout spinner. I think that fish was, and may still be, the world record. |

It's a Muskie message board, you expected something different? I see the foul language filter got you. Ease up, no reason to be concerned. |

Location: Duluth | Guess this is as good a place as any to decide this. Below is the fish that started my addiction 8 years ago, taken form a small river in Baraga County MI. Unfortunately she inhaled the little cleo i was using to catch walleye below a rapid and didn't make it. Since the catch there has been much debate among family members whether she's a hybrid or pure.
My guess is sconnie strain given the river system this little river flows into. Thanks in advance for the identification and promise I wont get mad when you poke fun

| I don't think it is a tiger, looks more like a Wisconsin strain purebred. The fish lacks the over sized head, fins, and tail of a tiger that size. It also appears to lack the spots mixed in with the bars like the tigers I regularly catch. The tail is hard to see but it looks like it is more pointed than a tiger but I'm not claiming to be an expert. I think the best thing would be to put the other tiger picture side by side with this picture for comparison. |

| CincySkeez, I believe your fish is also a Tiger, based on the shape of the dorsal fin along with the markings. Very hard to tell from the picture, and some pures can resemble this appearance... but there are a few indicators that lean towards Tiger. Nice fish, either way. Thanks for sharing.

Absolutely, that accidental hook up changed the way I look at river systems. It was the ah ha moment that made me realize I was in the middle of a pretty darn good fishery. Funny thing is everyone knows they are in there, they just don't really target them. |

Wow... Capitalizing on one of life's pivotal moments. Love it. Just imagine if things had gone the other way and the fish had cut you off before you ever even got to see it. It could easily have turned into just another tail of the time a guy hooked something big, followed by endless speculation as to what it could have been----foul hooked sturgeon and carp come to mind. |
