| My new to me 1993 Ranger 681T requires a new prop. 2003 Yamaha F60 4 Stroke. I realize it's an old motor on an older boat, but hopeful that someone on the forum ran this set up back in the day.
Thanks in advance! |

Do you have any numbers currently for the rig as you run it now? That will be a very helpful start in determining set-up for your rig.
The numbers that will definitely help out are as follows:
1. The max RPM for the motor
2. The gear ratio of the lower unit
3. The max RPM you can reach in the boat, full of gas and loaded with just you and your stuff.
4. The speed you reach at max RPM loaded above
5. The prop brand/model (aluminum or stainess) with the diameter and pitch combination you are running.
Without knowing anything, My gut instinct says you should be seeing anywhere from 30mph to 33mph or so with an outside chance of 35.

Understood....but to get him going, having some sort of baseline is what would really help. If he has one now, that gets us on the right track.
Otherwise, he could be getting incorrect info. Putting a 19 pitch or 21 pitch could be totally off, just like a 13 or 15 pitch. Without knowing a bit more, it's a crapshoot. Every boat and motor combination is different...even within the same brands and styles. If I ran a Ranger 690 with Suzuki engine, I might find my set-up to be completely different than yours. I'd be faster...
Lets see what he has first...and see if we can go from there.

| Thank you all for the input to date. I don't think I worded my question properly. Simply looking for some input from someone who actually owned one of these at some point to share what prop they ran. Sometimes boats run better with brand x props, etc.
It currently has a generic ratty aluminum prop, small diameter 12" pitch (I think) that you can over rev past 6,000 rpm's. Motor all the way down on the transom. Runs 30 MPH on GPS. If someone had one of these set up's and experimented with all kinds of props, which all of us under powered tiller guys normally do, hopeful to gain that wisdom on what type they ran.

| I used to run similar set up with 680T with 2stroke 60. Played with various props and made little difference. Your 4 stroke is nicer motor in most respects but you will get even less benefit than i did with my 2 stroke as 4 stroke has less power. Poor time and money to benefit ratio. Simple fact is your rig is built to fish not run fast. I would leave it at that and enjoy it as such. What an awesome fishing machine you have. Get a terrova/ulterra or upgrade electronics and such depending on how you fish if you want to upgrade. One guys take on it. Enjoy! |

We can wait for someone who has run that exact set up but please keep in mind...I could run the same exact rig as you do currently, and due to what I am looking for out of the rig could give you a recommendation that is not what you are looking for....then it is seen as a poor recommendation.
What are you looking to get out of the rig? Besides over-revving the motor, what performance are you wanting to get? More speed, quicker on plane? There are a few on here who know quite a bit about what they are doing with multiple boats because they have had many over their years of fishing, multiple props and multiple types of set-ups.
We can help, but if you would like to wait for someone with the exact same set up as yours, you might find yourself waiting for quite some time...
Chances are the prop on it now is a stock yamaha prop. If you want an upgrade to that prop, check out Solas propellers. Their design characteristics are a step up from a stock cast aluminum as they use a squeeze cast process... It allows them to make a bigger ear for blades, but a touch thinner with less flexing than a normal aluminum. It's a good step up from stock, without going steel. A good 3 blade in a 13 pitch would probably do you nicely, bring your rpms down to the 6000 which by my memory is the max RPM for that motor. Some of that depends on how bad the prop on it now is...if it has been dinged up, filed down, etc., then you might find a new 12 pitch will be the one you need.
The boat you have is a fine set up....no speed demon, but it will get you going, get you where you need to go, and do it safely. The rig is heavy, so 30 to 32 is about all you will most likely see out of it.
