The line on my NACL is not tracking back and forth. Does this mean that the pawl is most likely broken?

My experience is the idle gear is the first likely suspect, then the line guide pawl, then the worm gear

The pawl could just be worn out. Pretty easy to pull it out & replace.

Usually if the pawl has gone bad it will wear a groove somewhere on the worm gear causing the pawl to stick in that spot, or “jump” causing line to stack on one side of the spool.

Seems like the pawl is pretty easy to remove. I will check the idler gear as well. If the pawl is bad, is the worm gear most likely going to have some issues?

Hiya,

Chances are it will need both a pawl and a worm gear. I have had many many many of those go over the years on the 6500 series of reels. Not too hard to replace and not too expensive for parts either if I recall correctly.

To be safe, I would replace both the worm gear and pawl. If the worm gear is bad it will mess up the new pawl quickly...

Thanks for the info. Just to make sure, worm gear = worm shaft? Looks like both parts will be around $20 total. I will report back. Thanks again to everyone for the help!

That's correct. Have you had it apart yet? Do that first and check the idler gear. Could be broken or teeth missing or wore down. Unlikely that the pawl suddenly went so back it doesn't even go back and forth at all. As an earlier poster mentioned usually it will get stuck at one end, rather than not move.

I've found that you can get a worn pawl to work again by removing it and putting a little piece of paper or cardboard under the pawl. Thus pushes the pawl out slightly and it will once again make contact with the worm gear. If you don't have a replacement handy it can keep you fishing until you can get one. I usually have a couple in my box along with various Abu reel parts.

That’s pretty crafty...in the rare event of failure my method is to remove the reel put a new one on and call Propster

I could not imagine a peice of paper or card board fitting under there, I have thrown a second micro washer under there and that worked as well as my dad made it a week with some paper on the railing side of the work gear so the pawl would switch direction.

Most pawls will have a washer or two under the cap, most are lost when you take the Pawl cap off.
I have Pawls for the Toro reels and washers !!!
PM I can sent one out ASAP for you

Richard, I've always heard you should replace the worm gear when you replace the pawl. I've never seen any visible signs of wear on my worm gears. When pawls start acting up I clean them. If they are still acting up, I take them out and turn them 180 degrees. When they start acting up again, I toss them and put in a new one. So far I have had great luck with this. Am I asking for trouble??

Pawls are under $5 so I replace them once a year on my reels. You Do Not have to replace the worm gear unless it is damage !!!!

The thickness of something like a matchbook is perfect. (Although I’m dating myself since you really don’t see matchbooks around anymore) Tear off a little piece and push it in and insert your pawl. It does work. Although much better to have extra pawls on hand. Ive been replacing all mine with ceramic ones.

Pikemaster,

Why would you like them on bass reels but unsure on musky reels? I have them in my rockets and some in my upgraded 6500 c3s with no issues. Am I missing something? Thanks!

I can see where a ceramic Pawl when Casting 1/8 oz jigs will Cast with less resistance,
Not sure how strong they are and may break under the load a 12oz Plus Baits ???
Plus in Ice would they last ???
What do you gain in Musky Fishing with them over steel ones ??
I have them and seen lots of them snap off the ends !!!
Try them and see let us know what you find out.

Pike master,
If the reel is in free spool on a cast, how is the pawl under a load? Doesn't it just move back & forth in the worm gear? How is it under any more stress throwing a musky bait than a bass bait? I understand the gears and spool axle & bearings having stress based on weights of lures but I don't think the pawl would. Would it?

I think what you gain is that they wear out less than steel and are less prone to rust which may not apply unless you fish saltwater.

I have ceramic pawls in a few reels for a few years with no issues yet. I buy them from a guy in FL that builds and customizes reels. I have had no problems at all so far. Maybe there are others on the market from China that could be more prone to breakage. I clean & oil the worm gear regularly when I do my bearings. I'll have to take a few pawls out and look at them for any breakage.

Thanks.......TC

I like the Idea of Ceramic pawls, I got my from Mike’s in Canada
I have seen 2 break over the years. On Musky Reels with 100LB line on reels with a Dis engage Level Wind System I would not use a ceramic Pawl, but in Musky Reels that have Non Disengaging LWind I can see trying them out.
Yes the Quality of the ceramic is very important, PM me the name of your source Thanks
