Has anyone ever used their old braided line for backing on their reels when it comes time to re-spool?

I was told the braided tends to slip on a hard hookset, so, I use mono for my backing.

If you put some tape on the reel, and then tie a loop knot so the line clinches down on itself, you won't get any slippage. I get several years out of my Tuff Line. After 2 years, I simply wind it from one reel to another, effectively putting the fresh unused line on the outside. I have had zero problems doing this. I'm sure some will disagree with this practice, just as they disagree with the fact that I only use Garcia reels, and have had zero problems.

You must use mono for backing with "super lines". IF you dont you'll run the risk of having the braid slip on the spool (and spin) or slip upon hook sets.

There is a trick to getting the line to stay put with no slipping without backing...apply a course tape around the spool...something that has grit or texture. I take the white stickers that line companies, like Berkley, use to keep the line on the spool. Usually the "bulk" spools have huge stickers that work perfect. I've never had any slippage or line problems doing this and you never have to worry about a weak knot that combines the mono and braid.

Good Luck

I use straight TuffLine with no backing. 1 or 2 rounds of black eletrical tape on the spool first and I have had no problems with slippage. I can break the drag free on a hookset and still haven't had any line slippage.

I've used old braided dacron as backing for the superbraids and haven't had any problems. Just wind it on real tight.

all true. still, you save a lotta line and money when using mono backing, you only need half a spool of braid......

I'm talking about using my old line (80# Spectron) that I'm going to replace anyway, instead of throwing it out can't I just put it on the bottom with some tape to keep it from slipping.

Yup, you could do that to. Do you reverse your line from reel to reel to get another year out of it?

What reels did you decide on? I'm ordering my 3 new Morrum's this week!

Ralphie: sport me some 80# off that new spool and I'll set you up with some mono for backing. Feeling poor, but need new line.
