Anyone feel like our weather (Minnesota) has been unseasonally cold. Man we have alot of ice left and I think it is going to be a cool.water opener. Others thoughts?

It feels like it, but it's actually just closer to average here in northern MN. Compared to recent winters, it definitely is colder.

February in northern WI was colder than average but according to the TV weather guy, right now and for the next week we are right about average. Sure feels colder but statistically I guess it is not. At least St. Patrick's day was nice. Went down to New London, or as it is called for the week "New Dublin", and it was 50 degrees, sunny and no wind at parade time.
I have a couple outside projects I want to get done between snow finally melting and fishing season, so I am getting a little antsy.

I spend a lot of time this part of the year fishing walleyes on the Mississippi River. Water temps are behind where they usually are for me (recent years) and I would assume we're losing is a lot slower then we have in previous years. I guess I didn't mean the day-to-day high temperatures. I think our high temperatures are where they need to be but I feel like our overnight lows are still too cold

This has been the first "normal" winter in the past three years temperature wise. The last three have been quite mild. We haven't had a blast in the 60s yet which we are probably due for, but this winter is hardly extreme. How quickly we forget 2013...

Brad...

Right on the nail... I think overall, though, our winters in general have been milder than they used to be. In the 80's when I was a teenager, I could not recall a warm winter until 1986-87 where our cross country ski team had to travel north just to practice on snow, and early march we were wearing shorts outside...

A few cold ones in between, but warmer overall... I'd say this year is more to what I recall as normal...

I'm betting ice out will be right around mid April for the twin cities and late April for many of the lakes north... I know Hackensack area was usually around April 25th or so...

It seems to be a seasonal pattern, but a cold spell or warm up would change things one way or the other easily. I'd hate a repeat of last year's cold spring in WI after it looked like it would be a warm spring.

Here in FIBland only a couple of 50 degree days, mostly normal 40's for the high. The only thing that has been pretty consistent is the windy coldfronts every weekend you want to fish in the spring.

Walleye and bass fishing in northern Minnesota was the best when we had to wait for the ice to melt. after the openers, three or four years back. That first week after ice out was awesome. I'm hoping for the ice to leave, just before the opener. Then have a warm June.

We're running below normal temps here in Northern IL for the last few weeks. The winter in general has been average. Last year was way above normal as I had my boat out on the lake 3rd week in Feb!

Climate Prediction Center is calling for below normal temps in MN for the next month. Cool down next week and cold night temps will keep the ice around for quite awhile.

The long range forecast for northern WI also calls for cooler than normal temps for at least the next month. Not sure about forecasts of more than 10 days but that is the prediction.

It's been above freezing almost daily in MN for the past week or two. Temp wise we've been below freezing most of the winter, but we have had some nice thaws sprinkled about. Really the only bad part was the sustained 3-4 weeks of below zero from Christmas into the early part of January. That wasn't fun, but it wasn't exactly abnormal either.

In 2013 people forget that we had significant snowpack all the way through March and well into April. I think Lake Minnetonka recorded it's latest ice out ever that year, in early May. I had 6 foot snow drifts in my driveway that year from all the storms and frequent use of the snowblower. (God Bless that thing!)

This year hasn't had nearly the snow but it hasn't gotten REALLY warm yet. We haven't seen 50 in a long time. IMO, that is the only thing missing from this spring and probably why this thread exists. Hopefully next week when our weather starts pushing out of the SW again we'll tickle those temps. In 2013 I do not think we got above freezing once in March due to the large snow pack. I'll take 2017-18 winter every year over that. Of course, I'd rather a 2016 just like everyone else...

I think the late April ice out predictions are probably a good bet. Things could change quickly though, if we get a week in the 70s/80s and/or a lot of rain the ice will go very fast.

Spring crappies will be here soon enough. I'm sure as usual, I won't have any time to fish for them...

10 day forecast in the Twin Cities calls for below average temps in the upper 30's, lows in the teens. Going to make for a slow spring thaw if the trend continues. No doubt it will be a late April ice out if this trend doesn't drastically change for the warmer.

Just venting: because in my mind I have the perfect start to the season planned, almost mind blowing how good my plans are for multiple, big fish catches, follows, hits. And then there is the weather--still making ice into the near future. Just this morning my friend texted me that we should buy a snowmobile trail groomer off craigslist.

Ice was out way early here in SE Michigan. The walleye run just really kicked into high gear last week. Huron is dumping the last of its ice down the st Clair river this weekend and then you will be able to pick where you want to catch your easy limit. It gets tough here in the spring choosing between limits of perch and panfish on st Clair, limits of walleye with a few silver fish mixed in on the st Clair river, limits of walleye on the Detroit river, or monster lake Erie walleyes.

Quick 2 inch burst of snow this afternoon, and the news just said up to 8 inches overnight and through tomorrow, followed by a week of cold, barely getting above freezing, and possible big snow next Sunday into Monday, followed by a decent warm up. I don't care about the late ice out, but I got tons of crap to do in the yard and around the house, before fishing. Going to Green Bay for some big walleye fishing in April, and taking a trip to Iowa and squeezing in some muskie fishing down there in May, then our season opens in June. When the heck am I supposed to get any of my chores done with a foot or two of snow on the ground?

Actually, by the numbers, a pretty average winter. We just haven't had many average winters over the last decade. I remember multiple walleye openers(mid May) with some ice still on lakes, and some lakes and spawning grounds closed, as there was still active spawning on opener. I've just got stuff to do, and am tired of waiting.

Weird. Came out of the YMCA in Rhinelander today, between the snow and wind, felt like a bad day in January. Going to my nephew's bachelor party tomorrow. It includes a fishing contest on the Wolf. I have a conflict that will prevent me from getting there before dinner and can't participate in the fishing contest. Felt bad when I first responded, a month or so ago. Now, I am glad my role will be to sit by the campfire, eat dinner and enjoy a brew or two. May walk down to the raft and see how the team of older guys fishing there is doing. I will cheer them on.

Did some digging in the Brainerd, MN climate data. After Saturday night, there will be 7 days in single digits or lower for lows in April. That is unprecedented in the data records for Brainerd. That is over 100 years of data.

Opener will be late for general, or really close, and the Muskie opener may be a week or so behind with water temps and weed growth as a result. None of this will affet the spawn much.

I think it is hard to predict how things will shake out for the northern opener in WI. A few years back many of the lakes in the far northern counties of WI had ice on them for the general opener, but then it warmed up and at least on the dark stained lakes like where I live, things got back to normal fairly quickly. For whatever reason, I often see musky staging for the spawn next to my dock. Always on the side that gets sun in the morning and in almost exactly the same spot. They were in there about the same time as other years when the ice went out much earlier.
Hope they come back this year. Fun to look down and see a good sized musky right at your feet. And for the record the area they come to is shallow, sandy and no real cover or features that I can see.

Land O Lakes isn't going to be ice free for a while. 24-25 solid inches with another 5" of snow and hard pack on top of that,

I needed an extension last weekend in spots.

Wouldn't leave home without them. I ride roughly 4-7 miles from my place, down logging roads, backroads and lakes from my place to the Cisco Chain. The tracks have saved my keester many times.

I like the ride of a four wheeler much better than a snowmobile. I have thought the wheeler with tracks would be the way to go for ice fishing, but have never actually seen them in person.

I went back and Read an article in Musky Hunter about fishing a Bulldog with a bobber. Looks like I may have to try it. Can't get much drift in a hole in the ice though.

Bobber dawg on windy days. Tried if before with no luck, but I bet it works.

You never know, we could have two weeks in the 80s in May. I agree it probably isn't LIKELY, but neither is the weather we've had so far in April. The weather we had last Friday was between three and four standard deviations outside of what is considered statistically normal in the Twin Cities, according to NOAA. That isn't exactly a common occurrence...

Should mention too, that the frost is deep and still in the ground. Some resorter's are canceling their opening day bookings!

Looking out at the lake in front of my house here in Oneida County, the lake looks like it has 3ft high white waves caused by the high winds and snow. Tried to take photo but with everything white you can't really see the "waves". It was in the teens when I got up this morning, can't imagine the ice will be gone for the opener (non-musky).

Trying to be optimistic but it looks like if the ice goes out here before opener it will be right before. Metro area.

So far there have been three reports of roof collapses in the Green Bay area. Fortunately no one was hurt, including at a motel where the roof over the pool collapsed. It was early and no one was in the pool.

I can't believe how much it snowed here. We actually saw some flakes on the way to dinner.

Lake of the Ozarks Missouri, temps will go below freezing tonight setting a record.
