Location: Cheyenne, WY most of the year | Trying to determine which trolling motor to go with.
I have a 21' pontoon, 1850lbs dry
Fishing mainly on Mille Lacs in the wind.
Usually no more than 8hrs at a time at the moment.
If I don't need the 105lb 36v, I'd be able to save some serious money only going 80lb 24v. Any help is appreciated, thanks guys |

| Id go bigger if it was me but I get what your saying....I have a 80lb terrova on a 20ft Ranger fiberglass and it will do all day 10-12 hours no problem in the wind fighting current on the river. I would guess my boat not much if any lighter than yours... |

| I have a 20ft pontoon with a 90hp Mercury 4 stroke and I bought it new with a 54lb Minn Kota pontoon trolling motor. I don't use it much anymore but it was fine as long as there was not a lot of wind. The problem is that if you have a cross wind, the pontoon slides sideways much easier than a deep v fishing boat. The higher profile of a pontoon catches a side wind like a sail. The additional thrust will help you going into the wind but a strong cross wind is going to take a lot of power to overcome.
The pontoon was great to cast from, like standing on a dock. But wind was an issue. I live on a chain of five small lakes so I could always find an area where the wind was at least partially blocked. |

Location: Minnesota. | Eric,
Consider this. Would you want to take the chance that an 80lb'er is "good enough" and then find out it isn't? Darned costly upgrade now!!
For a pontoon I'd definitely go with the larger motor. The $$ will work itself out - (and darned quick if you're under-powered!!) |
