Location: Germantown & Land O Lakes WI | According to the Sportsman's Connection map book trolling is now legal on the Chain.....I was reading the lake(s) info when I got "pie-eyed" reading how good the fishing was for bass while trolling weed edges...then my jaw dropped again when I read how trolling suckers along weed edges was an effective way of picking of Musky. (I paraphrased, these are'nt exact quotes.) I believe the word "troll" was used 3 times in the info....no mention of the words "wind" or "row".
The book we have is as a 2002 edition with the words REVISED on the cover. The cover also has a thick black boarder running along the edges. Maybe somebody knows if they came out with a newer edition that corrects this!?!?
Please, Please, Please consult with either the WI DNR or local tackle shops before trolling the waters of Vilas Co (or for that matter any lake in northern WI).

Location: oswego, il | These books are great but full of inacuracies and contradictions in just about every category listed. Still worth having, most is accurate and a great way to narrow down your lake selections. I still wish fishing hot spots stuck with their old area map books. Still can't get maps and reports of lakes they had in their. |

Location: Chicago, Beverly | Definitely a decieving quote from the map book. I took it to mean using a trolling motor for positioning along weed edges etc.. Of course this was based on me knowing the chain isn't legal for trolling. Better off checking the regs or contacting dnr for better clarification. Heck, some of the stuff in the book could have been taken from pre-no trolling info on the lake even though it says it is updated. |

Im pretty sure you cant troll from the back of the boat. They finally legalized the use of trolling motors as you are casting in the mid 90's. Correct me if im wrong guys
Thanks |

Location: Hayward WI | Here's the wording from page 14 of the 2003 Wisconsin Fishing Regulations.
Motor Trolling
“Motor trolling” is trailing a lure, bait, or similar device used to attract or catch fish from a boat while being propelled (forwards or backwards) by a motor or a sail or while being towed by a boat being propelled by a motor or sail. Motor trolling is illegal except in some counties and waters as listed in the section titled Special Regulations - Listed by County, beginning on p. 17. Casting and immediate retrieval of a bait or lure while positioning a boat is not trolling. “Backtrolling” is only legal in waters where motor trolling is allowed. “Position fishing” is fishing from a boat where the fishing line extends vertically into the water while the boat is maneuvered (forwards or backwards)by a motor used to position the boat over underwater structure. Position fishing is allowed statewide in all waters.

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Unless I am reading incorrectly....if I keep my suckers hanging vertically ion the water, while I use the TM to move the boat over underwater structure, I am NOT trolling them. Right?

Location: Hayward WI | In theory Slamr your right, but it may come down to the warden's interpretation of the wording, if they think your "trolling" you get the ticket. If your using the TM to stay on a rock hump in wind I would call that "position fishing", but if your moving down a shoreline with the aid of the TM and dragging a sucker, in a sense it's trolling. There's just too much grey area to me. I wish we could get rid of the trolling ban in the northern part of the state, but the politics and emotion over it will likely never be overshadowed by the fact that trolling is nothing more than another technique used to catch fish that most people release. |

Up by me in Vilas Co, the wardens are so picky, they'd write you up for having cushions that were'nt "POOFY" enough! I'm so careful that I pull my suckers in and put them in the well before even starting my main!
Some people (state names will be left out to protect the guilty) dont realize that NO MATTER, if you have a bait hanging over the boat and use a TM, you're trolling...Period. If I had a dime for every guy I talked to and said..."hey pal, you're trolling"...and his response was " Im just moving to my next spot and that's not trolling."...I'd have my house up there paid off and I'd be retired 10 years ago.
The WI DNR makes thousands up there every year on this issue alone. Use this philosophy...If you have your main or TM ON and are moving with a bait in the water....you're trolling...EVEN IF YOU'RE CASTING AT THE SAME TIME!!!!!!!! |

Location: oswego, il | I was checked by a couple of wardens last year in boulder junction and I asked them about suckers and the trolling motor. Basically put, they will bust you if you use your trolling motor, regardless of your sucker position. They were very animat about it. |
