If you want something a bit more"exotic" you don't see as much on your side of the pond, have a look around for some of the European bait makers, we have been drowning in these baits for the last couple of years, and every video on the youtube of pike fishing all they do is to fish these types of baits, to the point where is has become quite boring to see them fish.
A bit like watching another musky film where they only cast bucktails all day long, and change nothing.

That being said they are super productive baits, I have also made my own for quite a while, and caught a 45.25" pike on one of my home made once, and i lost count along time ago of the amount fish between 40" and 44"

The 3 biggests ones i know about are the very big bob from westin (sold already rigged, weights 730grms 40cm long), the big gun from neon baits (loose body, 780grms and 48cm long) and the big benny from niklaslures (loose body, 530grm and 40cm long). But all 3 of these lures have major problemes.

The very big bob is meant to be fished as a jig, if you cast it, the soft body will fly off the jig head
The big gun is still just a prototype and neon lures isint sure if they will ever produce it
Niklaslures will only ship stuff to sweden for the the time being

So you are stuck with the giant mc rubber and the giant wolfcreek shad as your 2 biggest options for now.

Quite sad, isint it

Check out Thorne Bros, they have the Action Plastic rigless swimbaits available, theyve got the McRubbers, the Westin swimbaits, the Wolf Creek Swimbaits, these are the external rig variety, which i personally dont love..

For the price and the action, i like the Chaos Tackle Poseidons.. ive used the Shadzillas a lot, great action, but i get a ton of fouling, hook on leader, hook stuck in body, like 1 of every 3 or 4 casts. Very annoying.

IMO of the commercial products available, Shadzilla giant mcrubber and wolf creek have the nicest action. A lot of paddletails look great on the shelf but those ones look great swimming.

Last summer was my first time fishing swimbaits. I put in equal time with the new-to-me Swimmin' Dawgs and Chaos Tackle Posseidon. I have a couple observations--your own experience may vary.

First, these swimbaits get hit well, away from the boat, on just a steady retrieve. But where I had trouble was converting follows to bites in the 8--had numerous follows on swimbaits when not much else was working, but I am still trying to figure out the best trigger to bite in the 8. The usual stuff I do with bucktails was not effective for me with swimbaits. Any suggestions for these swimbaits in the 8?

These are great baits for a less experienced partner in the boat, they are easy to cast and there is not much resistance to reeling. Compared to the Posseidon, the Swimin Dawg needed just a bit more finesse on the cast to control how it lays out when it hits the water, otherwise the front hook can sometimes foul with the leader on starting the retrieve.

I can't wait to put in more time with swimbaits in 2018. Any suggestions on how to fish these would be greatly appreciated. I also plan to try adding the new Kramer Revolution blade attachment that is available thru TRO and MTO.

Keitech makes a 7.8" version of the popular bass sized swimbaits. Unrigged and available in only some colors.
Edit: These are known to be relatively fragile even for bass fishing so I imagine they'd be torn up easily.

I forgot all about these, mr. ronnestrand introduced me to these quite a few years ago while on a fall trip to Vermillion. may have to revisit these. We used to dress them with a small bit of flashabou on the front.

If you really want some in that size, just make a mold of out plaster of paris,, there are quite a lot of film on youtube on how to do it, its not that hard.
All the crazy features with scales and fint, are just flash for the fisherman.

Making a paddletail That has good action is trickier than u think. Getting optimum kick at slow and fast speeds takes some serious effort. Then making an internal Harness that gets your bait swimming level is testy too.
It took me 4 tries to get that perfect balance on my baits.
Pull style baits are a lot simpler to design IMO but the internal weighting is touchy in those as well.

The swimming dawgs have an excellent action.

Shadzillas are nice too, I am just not a fan of the hollow body.

^^^ no. I spent the last couple months tweaking my current 9" models. Perhaps next winter as I now have mine exactly as I want them so I can then enlarge all the measurements by 30%.
But I added a spinner/curly tailed jig and really nice large pull bait that is a larger version of one I did really well on last Fall on St Clair.
