Location: Mason City, Iowa | I am new here. I'm from the midwest, Iowa Way. Muskies are my new interest, catfish second.(catfish are good eating, so they will remain on the list no matter)
I am interested in what I need for a 5 lure package to get started muskie fishing this fall.

| Hi Sam,
Welcome, you will soon forget all about catfish. Except at cajun restaurants.
You'll want to get:
1) big bucktail-- start with black hair and a silver blade
2) Bucher topraider -- a spin-tail suface bait (it pops or gurgles depending on speed)
3) a large deep-diving crankbait-- I like DDD or Bucher Depth Raider, (non-jointed)
4) a jerk bait like Reef Hawg/Phantom or pull bait like Suick
5) Rad Dog spinnerbait for in the weeds black & orange is my top color but I have 5 of these)
You probably already have a heavy rod and baitcatst reel, use spectra 80lb line, it is easier to cast with, and doesn't snap off if your bail closes. Also makes getting backlashes out easier than if you use lighter superline.

If you have room for a few more lures I would get a stright countdown depth raider, but you have to know how to work it. I would also get some sort of weighted jerkbait like a 10" Suick or Bobby Bait. Another must have would be a Magnum Bulldawg in what ever color produces well on your lake. I prefer all black.

Sam, welcome aboard. Don't be afraid to ask questions, there are a lot of guys here willing to help you out.
As for baits for the fall, one of the most important fall baits I think would be some type of jerk bait. There are a ton of them out there so it's hard to list just one. Suick, drop belly Slammer, reef hawg, Undertaker, these are a few of my favs. Another key is a straight model crank bait, I use Slammers, DDD, Depth Raiders, Jakes to name a few.
One of my favorite fall baits is a magnum Bulldawg, this bait just calls the big girls out.
If you can use more than one line then a live sucker is the key to catching more fish in the fall.
Good luck and try not to spend the life savings right away. LOL

Five to Thrive:
1. 10" Jake from Muskie Mania Tackle (tenn shad is a good all around color)
2. 9" Bull Dawg from Muskie Innovations (black/orange)
3. 8" Phantom (take your pick of colors, but I like their walleye color)
4. 9" Weighted Suick (I personally like black/white)
5. Depthraider from Bucher Tackle (Perch is always key)
