Moving to one locator on tiller?

I'm currently running two helix 7's on my 17' tiller with one transducer on the trolling motor and one on the bow. They are not linked. I fish probably 50/50 stem/bow. I am thinking of upgrading to the largest Helix and mounting on a ram mount so I can swivel it and see it from the front and the back. If you run one unit do you miss having the unit on the deck up front? Any downsides? Thinking investing in the best DI SI I can afford will be better than having two units..

I used to have one gps/depth finder in the back of my tiller. The one on the trolling motor was for depth only. The though behind this is that I thought I could just swivel the back one around and look at it from the front. For a while I made do, but sun angle and other factors made this an inconvenience. I upgraded my front unit to a gps and have never looked back. Best thing I did.

Just too hard to see from the bow?

You'll constantly be looking back and that will get old pretty quick. I thought about doing this as well, and glad I never did. I've tried it with my HDS 8 and it sucks.

Mine are networked now and it's great.

I have a helix 9 mounted near the back. When I fish out of the front (rarely), I just stand closer to the back of the front deck. Works for me, but then again, I dont have another grand for another helix up front.

A helix 9 sonar/gps is on sale @ scheels for 599$. We're doing that on the bow and a helix mega SI @ the console.

To add, I'm in a 19 ft boat so slightly bigger than some of the examples here. I'm sure if it's all you had it would probably be workable. But if you going from having one on the bow to turning to look in the back I doubt you'll be on here saying how great it is. I certainly won't be switching.

I have a bird with si on the console that I occasionally turn around and look at from the front casting deck. Just have to remind yourself that the left side of the display is still showing the left side of the transducer.

The good and bad with one is that when you turn your head, that's when they bite.

You have two units now, why mess with it?

If your upgrading, why dont you just leave one 7" up front for a map/sonar unit and then add a Helix 9 in the back for sonar with the 7 for a map in back. Unless the only way to upgrade is to sell the 2 small units to pay for the large one.

Id leave the 7" up front and have a dedicated map in the other 7" in back, leaves you a larger screen for DI/SI in back as well.
