What is a "4500" series spinning reel?

How do you know the size when purchasing?

I'm going to add the new St. Croix Musky Spinning Rod to my set this year and they recommend a 4500 spinning reel.

Ca reach her - creature rod, double for tarpon in Charlotte Harbor

It depends on the brand.

A Shimano 4000 sized spinner is about the same size as a Penn or Diawa 3000 sized Spinner.

If you want a spinner for musky, it helps to remember the cranking power is better with bigger spinners that have larger main gears.

The Shimano Spheros and Gosa are excellent options for a musky spinning reel, they have large main gears for their size so they do have a significant amount of cranking power for a spinning reel. Get the 10000SW size, it will hold about 300yds of 65lb braid just for reference. The 8000SW is the same reel with just a smaller spool for less capacity, the weight difference of those two reels are negligible.

If you go with a Penn Spinner, the Slammer 6500III is about as tough and bullet proof as they come and has all brass gearing. If you want a lighter option, the Clash 6000 also has all brass gearing (and is what I currently use for my musky spinning rod).

Just a couple extra notes:

The Slammer 6500III would be the tankiest of the group (weighs about 25oz) and is all metal.

The Clash 6000 is the lightest (weighs 20.7oz).

The Gosa 10000SW (weights roughly 25oz) is the most expensive, but in the end is just a Spheros with extra drag power for targeting pelagics.

The Spheros 10000SW has the most features for the price (but still weighs about 25oz). I used to use the Spheros 10000SW on my musky rod (I use a 7ft 9in Okuma Cruz MH Popping, rated to 8oz) and the only reason I switched to the Clash was because the Spheros 10000SW reel foot was too small for the rod's Alps reel seat.
