| So I have a newbie question. Does the rod line weight refer to line diameter or actual pound test? Like a rod rated for 20-50. Is it ok to use 65 lb braid? | |

Location: ontario | Its just a guideline aka usless information. But to make an example if you have a HEAVY rod rated for 80-100lb line and put on 4lb test well then you will break your line on a hookset because that rods load rating exceeds 4lbs. If you had a LIGHT rod rated for 4-8lb line and put on 200lb braid on it then your rod will snap if you hook into a heavy fish or alligator. But this is useless because thats what setting your drag is for.
more importantly look at the lure rating for the rod. Too light a lure for the rod may not get good distance, too heavy a lure potential damage to the rod from overloading it. Put the 65lb braid on and tie it to your scale and pull down to see how much drag you got on your reel, if its rated for 20-50 i would set my drag to like 12-15lb ish... but thats just being safe | |

| Most of my musky rods are rated 40-65# line and most have 80# braid. | |
