This Saturday Nov 11th you can "pad" your muskie season total substantially !!
Plan was to net the rearing pond that is maintained by the metro muskie tournament funds and Twin Cities chapter of MI like we've done many times in the past. But the early unseasonably frigid cold looks to put 3 inches of ice on the pond by sat.
So we're gonna fish em out!!! Little savages should be willing to attack your offering expected to be in the 11 inch range.
DNR will have holding pens to drop them in.
If interested bring your ice rods or a regular summer light action rod,,some jigging raps or shiny spoons, power bait, single hooks make it nicer for the fish , "bring no minnows" this pond is controlled. Ice Augers of any type power or just hand will do.
We will catch has many has we can, transport them over to White Bear and Bald Eagle drop em in and catch em again in a few years!!!

If interested we will be meeting at the Kwik Trip in Stacy at 9am then caravan to pond stay has long or little has you like, just fish or come with to WB and BE for the release,,bring the kids too.

If you have further questions call Paul Hartman

Now that sounds like a lot of fun.

If I lived closer, I would be up for that.

That sounds like more fun than "regular" muskie fishing... I'd totally take a day to do that if I was anywhere close!

That would be a hoot with a lightline flyrod and barbless streamer pattern... if a guy had room for a back-cast and wasn't shoulder-to-shoulder and it really wasn't iced-up!

Dangit!

Hmm. Wonder how many will be lost to the pen VS predation in the lake through the first winter...

That is a bummer. I sure hope they still stock next Spring AND Fall, as WB is stocked annually.

This is a blessing, overwintered muskies have a much higher survival rate. To those who were looking for a chance to catch an 11x5 monster of 10000 jigs, i feel your pain.

If in fact there were predators in the pond before fingerlings were stocked that is unfortunate. Awhile back illinois lost a pond from a large population of salamanders. They were removed and problem solved. Excess fingerlings are stocked in lakes but just become bass food.

That is the case. The pond was used for raising walleye in the past and some slipped through the cracks. Sad and ironic.

Yes,,,dnr did test netting yesterday and found more walleyes and a few muskies in the nets,,pond will be netted in spring for the nice strong survivors.
At least for a change WE get to complain about walleyes eating muskies.

Does the DNR cover the ponds with netting? The musky clubs in illinois put funding through the illinois musky alliance to cover the ponds to keep the birds out. The return is huge, 30-50% more fish per pond and survival rates into the 90% range. If your state does not net the ponds, raise the money for it.

How big are the ponds? We bought nets for the rearing ponds in illinois. They pay for themselves in the first year. Bird predation is huge.

You could call the dnr and ask,,sometimes they allow you to fish their ponds if they are trying to clean them out no limit keep has many has you like,,I remember one pond that froze early a few years back and they let people keep has many walleye has they want.

Not looking to fry up any walters. Just wondering if they took them out so they're not chomping on the skis.

Yep they plan on netting them all out in the spring before they try again
