Today I witnessed a 42in muskie being caught at the coon rapids dam, anyone know if there's a decent amount of them in there?

every year you hear about one or two, but from talking with the fisheries biologists, the area downstream from monticello isn't particularly good habitat for them. St Cloud has a fishable population

Do you hear anything about the dam up on big sandy in mcgregor? Would that be a better option?

Not too many there either. Brainerd to St. Cloud is your best option. There are muskies throughout that long stretch. Upstream a ways from Brainerd has fish too.

Here's my coon rapids dam experience,,,
One spring a few years back my buddy got a call from his nephew that there were some big fish he thought were muskies but didn't know for sure that were dead on shore after the ice melted on the overflow pond next to the dam,,,we felt sure they were northern s he was seeing since he didnt know the difference,,but we drove over anyways,,went down to the pond and counted around half a dozen dead muskies most in the 38-43 range,,also one over 48-50 that kids dragged into the woods and hung from a tree, we didn't get too close to it has it was ripe!!!,,also nice dead walleye in the 6-8 pound range and smallmouths in the 4lb range. Evidently they swam into the pond in fall and got trapped when the ice came and died from lack of oxygen.
No evidence but I think there's some down there after seeing that but I've never gotten around to grabbing the waders and shore casting even though I keep meaning to. I don't think you can get a boat in there it's awfully fast.

I know they stocked about 15,000 fry in the area near Anoka in 1999, but haven't stocked any since. I have heard of some being caught up to a 53 that a guy in Thornes was talking about. He built a bucktail, and took it over there for a test throw. I thought they used to stock some in the St. Paul area of the Mississippi.

This at least gives me hope that I could waste hours at the dam when visiting the outlaws in coon rapids for boring gatherings.
