Fall pattern #1, what do you do?

Its mid october, the leaves have fallen and there is a good crispy frost on your boat. Your fishing a lake in northeast Wisconsin, outside temp is 28, wind will be out of the NW today at 15mph. High temp might get to 40 today, Water temp is 49 and its past turnover.

You have many choices to make, with big lakes, little lakes, clear and dark ones. You cant troll, because the law does not allow it. So what pattern and presentation would you do on a day like this.

First I would spray the line guides and the line on my reel spool with Reel Magic. Then I would get out one of Lindy Little Joe Tackle Co. Tiger Tubes 8" in Black Red Neon.Working drop off edges, with sharp 4 inch rod lifts as you reel in the slack slowly, getting the puff--puff--puff action of a big super tube jig,a very active slow presented action that they just can't resist under slowdown conditions.

My primary plan would be to fish suckers. I would fish a smaller lake or a broken up one(islands and bays) because 15MPH would be to much to drift a large open body. I would throw weighted Suicks, Amma-Bammas, and deep cranks. If my hands got cold I would take a break and concentrate on the sucker presentations, Packer game, and Point Bocks. The spots I would try first would be humps, points, steep breaks, and walleye spots.

If it's sunny out I would pick a darker lake and cloudy a clearer one. Knowing the wind direction would have me looking at maps and what structures would be affected by that wind on what lakes.

Larry Jones, I was told those tiger tubes were not available yet. I have been waiting with a baited breath. The Mann's 6" floating tubes are great too.[8)]

Todd, the Tiger Tube will be availible in 2002.
I received the new product line along with the pro staff catalog a few weeks ago for 2002.Ted said they will be availible soon.Very nice piece of rubber, sure Mr Worrall might be tying one on when he sees them.Definatly a bait that can be used in specific and precise presentations.

You can problably dress a big spinner bait with the 6 inch model as a trailler.Might make the bait heavy but definatly would give the lure a different look and attraction.

I would assume they may be hitting the stores for the next show season.

Some other goodies for snagless walleye fishing are part of the new line this year.
take care

First off I would slow down my lure presentation. When I think the lure is moving slow enough I would slow down some more! This is a great situation to use neutral buoyant jerk baits, my favorite is the old Striker's that are really getting hard to find now. I have a few that are perfectly neutral and I'll leave them sit still for 5 or 6 seconds in between jerks. I have almost ALL of my hits when the bait is not moving. The flash and wobble attracts the fish and gets there attention, but they eat the bait when it's not moving. (the longer pause somtimes the better) The only thing that would concern me is the wind and that the boat might drift a little to fast. I might use a drift sock or use the electric motor to slow the drift down. As far a locations, steep break lines close to deep water especially if the wind is blowing into it.

I'd first of all be very excited as that is when the muskies on the river here are at their most aggressive level of the year by far(save for a couple mid summer weeks). I'll be cranking 10" Jakes quite quickly to get them down and bounce the rocks off the current breaks while dragging a sucker. Up north I'd be on a medium size meso lake casting a trophy diver in perch(the perch are schooling nicely now and my up north friends are usually onto them now) off the secondary breakline but also looking for any deep green weeds left. Big shoreline related structure gets the nod from here on out for me.
