What do people use for a cheap temperature probe with a 20-30ft cord.

Maybe try a meat thermometer. I got one from walmart, seems pretty accurate for suface temp, haven't tried suspending it tho

Fishhawk TD. Only 5 ft increments but it is really easy to use and compact.

A fly fishing shop would have a conventional glass tube thermometer you could rig up on a cord..

Sinking fish tank thermometer.
Tie a cord on with a nail knot, glue it, mark the cord to your liking for depth control, and yer in business.
